Both coins in the same type holder, stored in the same container together in the same environment. Notice how the 1964 90% is toning differently than the 40% 1966.
I've seen quite a few of the forty-percenters take on coppery hues, like the one I posted above yours. I wonder if that's because of the larger copper content in the clad alloy. It would make sense, but who knows? I'm not a chemist and some things are counter-intuitive.
OK. All of the above Kennedy's were submitted for grading shortly after this post in addition to a Jefferson and Washington from the same 5 sets along with a 71-S Silver IKE Proof. The grades posted yesterday (In no particular order): Given the fact that I paid $150 for the sealed box these came in, I think I got really lucky! I'll post scans when the coins arrive.
I have no idea Caleb. I just received some sealed 1965 SMS Sets and scored a rotated reverse out of one of the sets. Definitely not the ROT-001 in James Book though.
NEAT! How much of a rotation? I use "clockwise" for explaining how much rotation, looking at the obverse flip the coin over end for end. The reverse should be straight up, if the top of the coin is pointing at 3:00 then that is a 90° rotation, at 6:00 it would be 180° and 9:00 would be a 270°. Basicly each hour position on the clock face is + 30°. For 1965 Special Mint sets, we have gotten several different degrees of rotation: 1/ 45°, 1/ 80°, 3/ 90°, 1/ 110°, 2/ 150° and one 315°
Awesome Pics everyone. Kennedy Halves are one of my favs. Can someone tell me what the 13 balls/swirls are on the reverse above the 9 stars just above "E PLURIBUS UNUM"??
They're clouds. The reverse of the Kennedy is modeled after the Presidential Seal. The wiki article is a good place to start... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_of_the_President_of_the_United_States Clouds have traditionally been used in heraldry to create a "nebuly line" that separates one theme from another. As with all symbols, there is a great deal of room for interpretation.
You know. I think I'm an idiot. But then I don't normally deal with die rotation so I'll forgive me this obe time. What do you think? The 2x2 was flipped top to bottom.
