I have none of the quality shown here but I want to share my story concerning Indian Heads. as a metal detectorist IHs were high on my bucket lists. For 5 years I dug every penny signal I came across with no success. a woman contacted me who wanted to learn about metal detecting and invited me to her house. We talked about an hour then she asked to watch me use one of my machines. We went to the area beside the road and driveway and I said, “If we’re lucky we might find a penny!” I made my first swing and BAM! there was a penny signal practically on the sidewalk and so shallow I could see the outline under the sand. I plucked it out and blew the sand off before dropping it in her hand, saying “Here’s your first buried treasure!” She examined it and said, “Cool! 1887!” yep found my first Indian head and gave it away. since then I’ve found several dozens, including a ‘64 fatty.
I found my first IHC when I was 10, (over 60 years ago) helping my dad dig footings for an addition on our house, which was an old farmhouse in Minnesota. It was then in the middle of a mid sized town, but when it was built, was on the edge of town. An elderly neighbor was watching our work. When I found the penny I didn't know what it was, I had started a Lincoln wheat cent collection, but had never seen an IHC. The neighbor asked to see it and noted the depression in the coin and said..."I think this was shot out of the air by Annie Oakley. He said he watched her when he was a kid about my age, shoot coins out of the air. That was up on the hill at the end of our block, now all homes and a church. Then it was a cornfield with only our home and some farm buildings below. Here is the coin also an 1887. That got me to expand my collection and I preferred circulated coins in good shape. I read everything I could find and decided to collect every Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cent design intentionally made by the mint for circulation. Here is the list with links to support the full collection set. http://members.iphouse.com/frech001/Al's Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cent Complete Design Set.pdf
I was trying to say that the post you replied to was made 10 years ago. And I agree, it’s still a terrific coin now, or ten years back, or whenever you see it.
