Yeah, you got me there. That was a mistake! I meant to include a follis of Constantine I and now it's too late to edit. Oh well, it's a thread about ancient coins on CT. The rule is: do whatever the hell you want. :)

I like Constantine as FIL AVGG. You can read the story here:

    Fig24o.jpg
    Fig24r.jpg
This is the best variety, with FIL AVG on the obverse and FIL AVGG on the reverse, only from Antioch.

A scarce coin to be sure, and in great shape! I keep hoping I can cherrypick one of these legend types for less than its market value, but it hasn't happened yet.

Some of the engravers were truer to Constantine's image than others. Sometimes they gave him a large, hawkish nose, which was apparently closer to the truth, judging by the extant 4th-century statuary. The question is: how accurate is the statuary?

I find it is not safe to judge a coin's date by the age of the face. The 7Calbrey example is relatively early so Constantine is younger than on the later types with soldiers and standards or even than with the campgates.

Now for a bit of a trick question: Who can ID this coin and give an approximate age for the face on this coin? The obverse reads CONSTANTI NVSMAXAVG.

This thread is coming close to showing a coin from each of the mints active in this period. Who has the rest to share? I'll add a MHTB Heraclea in Thrace unusual for telling us where Hearclea was located.
