Pretty nice set. I'm not too sure if I have seen such "cast" coin, especially coming from Hunan Province. I'm certain it's a contemporary counterfeit. Here's one example. Original coin was struck in Shanxi Province Here's another suspected example As for the origin of such warlord cash coins - these were made in Gansu Province. If I am not mistaken, Gansu Province has always been economically worse off compared to other provinces and it does not help that they are poor in natural resources as well. Most other provinces have access to metal mines. Guizhou Province is also another area where it lacks natural resources except antimony. The warlords needed to raise cash and melted down circulating copper coins and cast them into cheaper brass alloys. Somewhere along the lines I believe for one coin they melt down, they were making about 5 coins on average I am not aware that they had the technology or know how of machine struck coinage. These actually did manage to circulate and are still somewhat plentiful to find today.
