I like to collect Sinkiang and have quite a few, but will leave those for another time. Here are a few of my other China bits. These may not all fall under the Empire category.
I didn't see this until now. Sorry! I have been gathering them for the past two years. Counterfeits are always a worry, but I have been lucky so far with regard to pre Tang coins. I have been burned on a couple Yuan Dynasty coins, though...
Yes i think we all get burned. Fastest way to learn... Im always leary of cast items because authentication is so much harder.
This reminded me - if there is just one example that I can nominate, it would be this I would have liked the crown size but this will do. I have a matching 1 jiao and 2 jiao (damaged) but thrown in the towel for larger denomination. I'm certain some German coin collectors may like this
The original host of the Chekiang 10 cash coin can be identified if there is better closeup photo. I'm suspecting it's 1898 5 fun which is the most common of this type. Another example of mine This is a wild example of Chekiang muled with Hupeh die with an coin alignment (not medal) which is an impossible combination. While the original host coin 1895 5 fun coin was used, this becomes a question of who issued this coin or even the origin of this. While some scholars reckon that this particular type of coinage is contemporary counterfeit (some are), some match genuine examples but this does not make much sense. I believe an author once thought that some Japanese took the scrapped 5 fun coins and struck the coins themselves. I personally believe the mints at that time were involved in corruption and would do anything to make money for themselves. I guess we can leave that to another topic. On the same topic of overstruck coins, there is also another well known type, however much harder to find. Uighurstan (Uyghurstan / East Turkestan) 1933 20 cash overstruck over Xinjiang 10 cash. This was an attempt to create an Islamic state which was oppressed in less than one year. Obviously this is not a coin that survived too well as it would not have gone well with the Communist party.
Got 2 new cheap pieces. Not the greatest pictures but for under 20$ shipped for both i cant complain. 1903 Kirin 10 Cash(es) 1904-05 Shangtung (Shandong) 10 Cash Y221
