It is - Anvers is the French version of the city's name; the local (Dutch) version is Antwerpen. As for what is depicted on the pieces from Aachen, see here. The animal skeleton on the Menden coin is that of a cave bear found in the Reckenhöhle in that city. Christian
Would not really count that as an emergency issue. The Vatican always issues such Sede Vacante or Vacant See coins when a pope dies. But yes, 1978 was an exception because they had to add the month ... Christian
There are even more, hehe. During the civil war, various Spanish cities and regions issued local money: Asturias y Leon, Menorca, Segarra de Gayá, etc. Some have fairly crude designs (heck, considering the circumstances ...), others are nicer. So I am most interested in the basque region because of their history. When I lived and studied in Spain, we learned a little about them and I even made it to Madrid to see Picasso’s Guernica. I also drove through and stopped in the Basque Country on a road trip through Spain. I feel a little more connected to them and I’ll have to seek out a coin they minted.
