Here's a coin I bought for fifty cents at the 2020 FUN show. Not exactly a recent purchase but I haven't bought many coins since then so this will have to do Caught it picking through a bucket of British large cents. 1865 Vereinsthaler (silver) Valued at $45 by NGC website
It's not one I see too often (although I don't check all the venues and am nowhere near the biggest expert on these ). It's definitely worth at least having a Heritage account to check prices (as they have an extensive archive of sales).
If a deal fell in the forest and no one was there to hear it, is it still a deal? I paid $105 for this about a year ago. Grade versus value discussions could ensue, but the thing is, it's a discovery coin. It's Obverse I on a 1901, a previously unknown transition variety (and also an undocumented 1/1 RPD). How much of a deal was it? Too obscure?
