The wax deposits on the reverse are from the impression taken for illustrating the coin in this sale. I know that PCGS (and probably others) were offering a service to remove these 'unsightly' deposits, with before and after images to demonstrate. I would implore anyone thinking of going down this route not to do so as it effectively removes historical evidence. The presence of wax tells you that it has either been illustrated in a sale catalogue, or sometimes an impression was taken by a museum to make a record of the dies used.
