ex-Franklin Mint archives Unique pattern 1983 FM Proof Quarter Balboa with "LEY 0.500" reverse (possibly a pattern for a Panama 1983 Commemorative series that never came to fruition):
British Anglo-Saxon. Kings of all England. Æthelred II, AD 978-1016. AR Penny (19.5mm, 1.73g, 9h). Long Cross type (BMC iva, Hild. D). Ilchester mint; Goda, moneyer. Struck circa AD 997-1003. Obv: + · ÆÐELRÆD REX Λ(NG)LO; Draped bust left; pellet behind. Rev: + GO D MΩΘ GIFELC; Voided long cross, with pellet at center and triple-crescent ends. Ref: SCBI 7 (Copenhagen), 332 (same dies); Hild 1029; BMC 98; North 774; SCBC 1151. Good Very Fine, toned, peck marks. Very rare mint. Ex Hermann Vogel Collection (A. Hess 189, 16 April 1928), lot 1590 (with his ticket). Ex Triton XXII, Lot 1381. Hammer $600. CNG Note: The acquisition by the Ashmolean Museum of the Stevens-Cox collection of West Country mints in 2013 has significantly reduced the number of Ilchester mint coins in private hands.
Not to mention the donation of the only remaining Petherton in private hands of the 5 coins known. My attempt to get an example of all the Somerset mints was fatally holed below the waterline at this point. To date, nobody has ever assembled a full run of Somerset mints because although Lockett had all that were recognised at the time, he didn't have a FRO(?), which has now been attributed to Frome (see page 4 for an example). Completion remains out of reach.
AV Dukat 1697 Nürnberg Mint Hohelohe-Neuenstein/ Grafschaft Wolfgang Julius von Neuenstein-Hohenlohe ex: Horn Collection
Here is another ex-Pretoria Mint coin not in BM or Royal Mint collection to the best of my knowledge (all the silver satin specimens of this year appear to have been plated at the Royal Mint and evidently to "improve" appearance the surface appearance, possibly post strike and this thin layer is oxidized variably on them). Apparently only two sets were struck of all the coins from farthing through half crown dated 1924 with only the penny dated 1922:
This farthing is struck in silver and was specially minted for the young princess Elizabeth and princess Margaret. Mint director Robert Johnson retained an example for himself (this coin) with it being unclear how many were struck altogether. Supposedly the idea was to give each of the young ladies a specimen set of silver animal coins appearing on coins of the Empire. I have not seen other than the wren. This coin is ex-Norweb. Old picture:
Let's have a Norweb theme. Henry IV heavy coinage halfpenny, ex Longbottom, Lockett & Norweb collections 1804 copper pattern 5 shillings / dollar struck on a thick flan (5mm). ex Brand, Norweb & Barr collections 1831 proof halfpenny with upright die axis - much rarer than the inverted type. ex Norweb & Nicholson collections Undated Victoria pattern decimal halfpenny (struck 1857-9) in aluminium-bronze. ex Nobleman, Brand & Norweb collections 1929 proof bronze halfpenny, ex Norweb & Tansley collections
This is my only coin with a name on the label. https://www.coinworld.com/news/world-coins/second-part-of-roehrs-collection-brings-616-0.html
The Norweb collection was amazing. I think four members of that family had built up tremendous collections.
Ah, Norweb, my weakness. Here are four proof George V shillings of exceptional quality and stil raw in 2x2s:
A handful of coins, all ex-Murdoch and Roberts collections. J G Murdoch is well known from his sales post-mortem in 1903-4, but Evan Roberts not so. He was a clock repairer, whose collection of timepieces is now displayed in the V & A museum in London. The coins purchased in 1903 were eventually sold in two lots - the base metal coins sold through Glendining (1993) and the gold at a provincial sale in Plymouth (2008). Attribution was made possible by the contents of the 2 sales a century or so after the Murdoch sale matching the lots bought by Roberts. As the number of coins involved was 70, the circumstantial evidence was overwhelming. I wrote an article regarding the Weyl patterns to this effect in the 2011 BNJ. Weyl 1887 pattern halfpenny struck in tin with a milled edge. Also ex Nicholson. 1860 pattern halfpenny struck in tin with a milled edge 1790 restrike halfpenny, Peck type R64. Due to the vagueness of the description in the Murdoch catalogue, it was only possible to positively identify the Soho pattern die combinations and hence the type involved, in 2008. 1860 obverse uniface penny 1860 penny struck in lead. Also ex-Colin Adams All of these are unique to the best of my knowledge
An 1860 pattern penny struck in silver with the obverse die in its original unrusted state and the third reverse (Peck 2117). ex Carter, Peck, Magnay and Adams collections. Apologies for using the Heritage pictures as it is a recent acquisition and I haven't got round to cracking it out of the slab and imaging it yet. An obverse uniface striking of an unfinished die by Joseph Moore. Analysis has shown it to be over 90% tin with lead as an impurity. This uses the coroneted head punch seen on the 1860 patterns by Moore which are known to exist in a heavily flawed state. When Shorthouse visited Moore's workshop in September 1886 there was no sign of the coroneted obverse die, so I surmise that the die cracked and was reworked by Moore to produce this with the revised legend as there are traces of underlying legend commensurate with the Peck 2135 obverse. Ex Magnay and Adams collections. Magnay acquired it from the dealer Patrick Deane, it having come from a US collection in 1984. If anyone has any info regarding a collection from this time including this coin, it would be much appreciated. TIA. A 1697 halfcrown struck at the Bristol mint during the recoinage of 1695-8. This coin ex Adams duplicates (not in sale) Henry III 3ab1 long cross penny of Ilchester. ex Elmore-Jones, Bohr (Clarendon) and Sazama collections. A rare mint for this issue and struck shortly before the mint closed for good. A late Soho mule pattern halfpenny with a 1797 obverse and 1795 reverse die pair. Peck 1046 refers. Examination of the rust spots indicates that this type (KH5) was struck prior to type KH4. This is an extremely rare coin, with no examples coming to market in the UK in over 50 years - the last being in the Spink Circular in 1968. This coin ex Riever and Cope collections. Edward VI 1549 6oz. shilling with mm. Swan. ex Cope and Lessen collections
1845 halfpenny, ex Peck, Hopetoun House, Whittall and Nicholson collections 1795 pattern halfpenny struck in brass (P1055), ex Nicholson 1734/3 halfpenny, ex Stone. Very pleased to get this one as I can count the number I know of on one hand, and haven't seen better in nearly 20 years of looking for an upgrade 1738 halfpenny with V/S in the obverse legend and only marginally more common than the previous coin. ex Augustus Langdon (d.1874) 1943 halfpenny struck in brass as a test piece when the mint relocated some operations to Iver Heath during WW2 to avoid the London bombing. ex Tansley collection 1894 halfpenny, the last year of the bun heads. ex Cheshire collection (MS65)
I am glad I started this theme! Your British examples are impressive/ thanks for sharing them!!!!! John
