A few more. James I third coinage shilling with plume over the shield and mm. Lis. ex Lingford and R C Carlyon-Britton collections Charles I double crown with mm. Anchor (obv. over Tun). ex P W P Carlyon-Britton, Ryan and Doubleday. An extremely rare mark for the denomination. Lockett 4145 is better, but now in the Schneider collection which won't be sold, and there is also a very wrinkled example available. I won't be holding my breath waiting for an upgrade, as it would be terminal. 1867 Bronzed Proof Halfpenny, ex Fred Baldwin, Norweb, Nicholson and Cheshire collections William II type 5 penny of Romney, the moneyer is GOLD. ex Lawrence, Roth, Drabble, Lockett and James & Martha Robertson collections. Rare. There is another, slightly sharper example which was dug up about 25 years, but it has a large crack. A 'pattern' half crown sample with mint cancellation cuts. Metal analysis shows this to be approx. Fe 86.9%, Mn 0.8%, Cr 12.3%. Subsequent conversations with Graham Dyer, the former curator of the RM museum, suggested this was struck to test a metal mix with the dies chosen at random. Ex Colin Adams collection. Colin assembled the best and most comprehensive collection of this denomination to date. Charles I lightweight halfcrown with mm. Cross on Steps (obv. over Lis), struck sometime between 14th August and 7th September 1626 at a reduced weight of 80 grains per shilling (from 92.75 grains). This coin 13.04g instead of the normal nominal 15g. Ex Middleham Hoard (1993) and Hulett collections, the coin exhibiting the typical colour of coins from this hoard.
Just checked my catalogues/ not there. I must be missing some..... NFA was the auction firm that got me into real coins. Before that I was collecting those silly Franklin Mint Proof Sets/ World Proof sets. NFA was probably the place to get (if you had the big bucks) those dream coins/ plus their stuff was beautifull quality......
Baron von Bruck Coll. AV 2 Tari d'oro ND Messina Mint Friedrich II von Hohenstaufen 1198-1250 Holy Roman Emperor/ King of Sicily
Yes I know. Unfortunately I did not buy a very high end Julius Aes at the time. As mentioned I recall a price of $950. for the piece. Unlike yourself I buy very very few pieces these days as work in the science fields is very tight. Thanks for checking. Ill try that Bryce Brown in Avon CT feller that robp suggested.
1658 Cromwell shilling, ex Owen Parsons and Andrew Wayne collections 1797 penny with 11 leaves to the wreath and raised dots on the rock behind Britannnia (Peck 1133A). This is an overlooked rarity as I believe only the one reverse die is involved. This appears to be the second best to the Spink catalogue coin (which is a magnificent specimen in hand, but going nowhere in a hurry). Ex Colin Adams and Harris collections. Colin built a comprehensive high grade milled penny collection to pass the time when additions to his halfcrown collection were hard to come by. 1660 silver pattern farthing by David Ramage, ex Carter and Nutbourne collections Charles I Tower Mint 3a crown with mm. Triangle over Anchor over Tun on the obv. and Triangle over Anchor on the rev. ex Whitley and Warwick collections. There are two reverse dies recorded paired with this obverse, the other one being Brooker 264.
William I (or II?) PAXS penny of Bath. The moneyer is GODESBRAND. ex Durlacher, Carlyon-Britton and Lockett. William I Sword type penny or Dorchester, OTER ON DORECST. Unique of this type with the two small crosses by the neck. Another variant has a large cross filling most of the same field (2 known). ex Mary Willett and Grover collections Philip and Mary 1557 sixpence, ex Carter, Ashby and Cattermole collections Charles I York sixpence from the Civil War period. ex Miller collection. Sixpences are the hardest denomination to get in good condition from this Royalist mint. Also note the two dents where the coin was forced out the 'pastry cutter' used to cut the coins from the strip. Henry VII first issue halfgroat of London with mm. Lis on Rose. These are decidedly rare with fewer than 10 known. ex Lingford. This is the fullest flan extant, but not the highest grade example which is irregular.
Schwabische Hall AV Quarter Dukat 1714-N Nürnberg Mint HRE Karl VI 1711-42 Coin celebrates Peace of Baden/ signed in 17/ Sept.1714 Augustana Coll.
ex-Pretoria Mint Great Britain 1922 Florin struck in GOLD. This was the accepted (mint stamped "A" at 11 o'clock reverse) 0.875 alloy for the upcoming Egyptian gold coinage....There were five coins of different alloys and different weights. This coin had harsh planchet preparation only partially struck out.
ex-Gerald Jackson (an unheralded collector of later milled British Pennies) sold at Spink USA ~2016). 1869 Great Britain Penny. Sorry about the crappy pictures...
Thanks. Just realised I have duplicated the PAXS penny from earlier - apologies. A few more. First up a Charles I angel pierced for the Touching Ceremony with mm. Bell, the reverse mark also over Portcullis and Harp. Due to the low mintage of many gold issues, dies were frequently overmarked for following period if they were not worn out. In the case of Chas. I angels, a total of 25000 were struck for all marks across the entire reign, meaning all marks are rare. This coin ex P W P Carlyon-Britton, Lockett and Brooker collections. An Edward II class 11b1 penny of Bury St. Edmunds. ex Amble Hoard, and Eaglen collections. This coin being illustrated in Eaglen's book on the BSE mint. Henry VIII halfcrown with mm. Rose/Lis over Rose. ex Wayne and Adams collections Oxford 1643 halfcrown with Morrieson dies H-23. The reverse die is of particular interest as it was sent to Chester where it was reworked into the 1644 'Declaration' halfcrown. The worst of 4 known for this die combination. ex Lingford, Hunt and Hulett collections. Henry VIII Posthumous issue penny with mm. Grapple. Rare. ex Carlyon-Britton and Shuttlewood collections. Continental Sceat, Series E, variety C. ex Stewartby and Abramson collections
Aethelstan I of East Anglia penny, ex Wayne collection. ext rare with only one poor example noted by Naismith Charles I unite with mm. bell and the reverse error reading of FLORENNT. Two examples known with this error. ex Lockett, Brooker and Selig collections Henry VII tentative issue groat with mm. Lis/Greyhound's Head and without VII in the legend. Believed unique with this die pair. Ex Montagu, Murdoch, Morrieson, Lingford, Carlyon-Britton and Stewartby collections Contemporary forgery of an Edward IV groat with mm. short cross fitchee. ex Lockett and Stewartby collections Edward III 3rd (Florin) coinage halfpenny of London. ex Hall collection Charles I halfcrown with mm. ex-Spink Millenium (2000) SNC: 1926ME Penny - possibly as you would ever hope to see, picturing the lustre is really a struggle -
