A few William & Mary oddities A 1694 pattern halfpenny struck on a thin flan - Peck 598. Not very nice, but extremely rare. ex Lawrence and Nicholson collections 1694 halfpenny struck in brass - Peck 607. Peripheral weakness, but a lot nicer than the other one in the BM which is struck off-centre, quite worn and generally unattractive. ex Nicholson A trial striking with a pair of impressions of the 1689 farthing on a Charles II halfpenny. The actual 1689 farthing (Peck 564) is only known from 3 examples, 2 of which are in museums. This is the piece referred to in the footnote on p.155 of Peck. ex Colin Cooke collection.
That must be one of NGCs early holders/ never seen one ever like that. I made my own stick on data labels for all my PGGS/ NGC/ ANACS/ CCCS holders. These have all the data.

I like Viking/Saxon/Norman too, and more importantly, so does the wife, which gives me a bit more leeway. A few James I today. Third issue halfpenny, ex Gietzelt Rose ryal with mm. Cinquefoil over Trefoil over Tower over Mullet over Coronet on the obverse and Cinquefoil over Trefoil over Tower on the reverse, dating the coin to the period 20th Oct 1613 to 17th May 1615. The coin was therefore current for 33 shillings, as gold had been revalued up by 10% in 1612. Ex Shaw, Lockett and Stewartby 5th bust shilling with single arch crown and mm. Coronet. Ex Lockett 5th bust double crown with mm. Plain Cross (rev. over Crescent). The reverse is a bit soft, but a cracking portrait. ex New Horizons collection, sold through CNG a year ago. 1860 pattern penny by the Birmingham die sinker Joseph Moore - Peck 2114. ex Colin Adams. This is a restrike by Moore for Shorthouse struck in 1886. Peck inexplicably lists this as struck in Antimony, but it is questionable how he arrived at this conclusion. Analysis by Freeman gave 2 parts Tin : 1 part Lead and my own XRF analysis comparing Antimony, Tin and the coin, showed the main component to be tin. Antimony having a similar spectrum to Tin, but approx. 100 keV higher in energy. Apologies for the unequal scaling. Charles I B5/2 shilling, ex Lockett Charles I groat with mm. Book, struck by Thomas Bushell at Aberystwyth. ex Brooker collection William III 1697N sixpence, struck at the Norwich mint during the recoinage. ex Alfred Bole Collection.

Aberystwyth threepence from Thomas Bushell's mint. ex Bohr and Hulett collections Henry VII 'Sovereign' penny of Durham, struck under Bishop Sherwood. ex Archbishop Sharp collection 1790 pattern halfpenny (Peck 989). ex Frank Robinson collection Reverse uniface in copper for a pattern two pounds, dated 1828 (on the edge). ex Murdoch 1741 Sixpence with roses in angles. ex Scothern collection.
Nice there Rob. I noticed that a bunch of coins have now LOST provenance as I think I got some of the nicer Colin Adams George V pennies and even some of the halfcrowns...
Provenances are continually being lost, assisted in no small part by the TPG's who frequently don't record or incorrectly record the provenance, and often lose associated tickets in the process. They're basically an impediment to recording historical data - which is another reason why I need and have a large and continually expanding database. Collectors who don't appreciate the value of associated tickets, so bin them, are also a problem. But hope springs eternal that they can be educated. And while on the subject of provenances - a few more. Charles I G1/2 with mm. Triangle. ex Ashley and Brooker And another, this time with mm. Star. ex Lingford and Ashby A pair of Huth pattern double florins. This one struck in Iron is ex Wallis Another, but this time on a very thick flan and struck in Zinc. Comes with a ticket that says ex Brushfield and Lingford, but IMO the jury is out on that one as the image in the Lingford catalogue looks to be more corroded. 1811 Frome shilling token, ex May collection 1806 gilt pattern halfpenny Peck 1357. ex Thompson and Johnstone collections
