Bought this off heritage the other night. A slight upgrade to my current 15-D, so that one will go to the for sale pile.
Hey dimeguy, I know it isn't your first Barb, so you are already initiated. That dime is definitely XF.
The other three I own were impulse buy...no real consideration other than, "Hey, there's a dime I don't have!" This one I actually attempted to eyeball for eye appeal and grade...albeit incorrectly, but I'm learning.
I'm reading this book right now called Double Eagle. You can guess what it is about, but man oh man did Saint-Gaudens dislike Charles Barber! Two huge names in American coins clashing on multiple occasions!
Ok Ok - I guess I should bring this thread back to earth . I just have a hard time saying no to barbers - even when they're worn down to AG-G. I find it easier to say no to quarters and dimes but not that easy - just not in the photo now.
yesterday, my Barber dime was confirmed to be a fake by one of my favorite coin shops. I am going to try and post images. of course, it's hard to see cuz my cell phone is bad. There is bubbling (or maybe corrosion on it). I had three people at the LCS look at it. they all said it was a fake. They told me to take it to ANA (during the upcoming Long Beach show).
Its hard to tell what is wrong, without it being in hand. If its a fake - its a good one - all I thought from these images is that the luster is stripped - and for an XF + coin - it has no punch. The 1913-S is a very tough date and a good friend tried to win a PCGS 55 on Teletrade the other night - when asked what I thought would win it - I said $720 with the juice. It sold for $650 + the juice. So, I was even short. My friend max'd his bid at $625 - and thought that was a stupid bid. Show it to folks at ANACS for a free opinion. If they say its good - then submit it to PCGS for a Genuine Holder. Regardless... good luck !!!
My newest Barber... an upgrade from a PCGS 55 [ pulled from pocket change by my Grand Father ] for this :
