Good question - I'm still learning grading these and constantly look and compare. It seems that 40 would require feather detail to the tips, full liberty band and maybe some more forehead hair detail but thats just what I try to go by Edit - Ok I'm going to say it's a 30. On the reverse the eagles head and talons and tips of wings all show too much wear. In addition, the arrows in the talon look too worn as well - I think this looks 30 On the obverse I think this coins looks like a 35 but doesn't quite hit 40. The eye detail appears a little muted, the forhead hair is lacking a bit and the liberty band is not full Thats my take on it but I'm a newbie to this
Lance - I really like your 1892-S - quite a lot !! Excellent look. Very original too. I think its important that the members figure out the grade by themselves, and not give it to them on a platter. If any one thinks its a 30 - tell us exactly why you think that - if its a 35 - let us know why you think its a 35 - and - the same thing goes for XF 40. Here's a newp - it was the toning that got to me...I disagreed with the grade, however.
I'm saying this is an AU-53 There is enough wear on the talons, tops of wings and head to go higher IMO but I never pay much attention to ones up this high because they're beyond my range.
Nice looking 92-S, Lance. That coin has a great look to it and not an easy date to get a hold of. :thumb: I picked this one up this evening. It's a very common date, and I already have one. This one looks nicer than my current one and I paid quite a bit less for this one. Plus I noticed something up with the 9 in the date. It's probably nothing, but worth a close look when she arrives.
Mike, I'm going to guess that one is in either an AU50 or in a gennie holder. It looks to have been dipped and put in a library of coins album for some years.
You got the 92-S right - but are off a bit [ according to the NGC Graders ] on this one. I only bought it because it was undergraded. Its off to PCGS and they should recognize it for what it is. I'm thinking its an AU 50 myself. I have gotten a few bumps from PCGS recently with NGC coins.[ In the past, I lost lots of grades ... it seemed as if it was an automatic result. ] BTW, in the off chance they see it as a cleaned coin/ dipped out coin that was retoned in a Library of Coins album, I plan on submitting the coin in its NGC holder. I see it as a marketable AU 50 coin. Here is the holdered image:
Nice, LP... You went for it! It's definitely a solid piece, but how do the horizontal lines on the obverse look in-hand? Do the photos make 'em look worse than they truly are? -Brian
Drat! Of course whenever I share on a "Guess-the-Grade" I'm way off, but when I keep a grade to myself it's correct! :rollling: No matter the grade, Mike, the coin looks superb! If you decide to send it off to PC, please share what they've said when you get it back. -Brian
Here is the latest one my son picked out - the scratches you see are on the 2x2; I have to swap it out but it's not original The price was right and he liked it so we own it now
I just won it last night. I'll tell you when it arrives. The lines don't bother me...not even in the picture.
Here are two more that I've never photo'd yet. I'd like to upgrade these too but that goes for most of them haha. For now I want him to finish the set before upgrading a bunch of them but if the opportunity presents itself - we'll do it. There arent' many dealers with many barbers around my parts. and another
Jim, the newer images are pretty good, really. Better than I can do. Just remember, keep all of E PLURIBUS UNUM on the scroll on the REV. - & - you'll have a nice uniform collection. Your 11-D is very nice. Look at the S mint mark on the 1907 - to see if it's been repunched. Small premium for it in VG-Fine.
A WORK IN PROGRESS! This is the entirety of my Barber collection. Still working on getting a Barber quarter. LOL once I finally get some spare money...whenever that will be.
Please note: If you mouse over the two pictures I took a pop-up will appear of the picture in much larger, high resolution image. I wish the pictures were that big in my post.
