My latest addition. 15 coins to go. Most of you 'regulars' on this thread could probably guess the coins I need to complete the set in (mostly) Fine.
Elizabeth Taylor was right - the prices of Butter and Diamonds have gone up. I was slammed the other night on an 1893-S Half in PCGS 12 - I bid $453 on ebay and it sold for $657...out frigging rageous... I just paid more for a 1904-S in PCGS 30 than I did for my first AU 55 twelve years ago. The 96-O and the 96-S are also tough ones and I was lucky to find a couple in ANACS holders - that are being cracked out for the Dansco. RaceB... nice solid Fine/VF coins !!
You'll have a tough time as well locating a nice 1905-O. I was offered one in VF 25 - completely out of the blue a few months ago - which prompted me to start the set that I'm currently working on. [ It doesn't take much to get my collector juices flowing again on yet another Barber Half Dollar collection. ]
Log, you guessed most of them. Mostly the key dates in the '90s and the 01 S, 02 S, 03 O, 03 S. At a coin show a couple of weeks back, I had the opportunity to buy a nice 96 S in Fine. The guy was asking $250, I countered that his price was $50 over RedBook. He said, I'm not budging on this price, someone will buy the coin at that price. The gun-metal gray toning from circulation was superior on this coin. Just a really nice piece. I guess I'm in the realm where demand outpaces supply now. Time to break out the wallet for these last few coins. But yes, it's a fun and challenging series in these grades. It would be so much easier just to drop down even to VG, but they just seem to be hard to find in the mid-range grades anymore. Therein lies the challenge.
RaceB - $250 for a 96-S in Fine is a tad high - but if the coin was as nice as you say it was - you may have missed out on a good coin. I paid $200 for a raw VF 20 two years ago - quite nice actually - and sold it as part of the set I finished last year. I now have a VF 30 in the current set. Nice coin - tough date. Good luck finding what you need - if you need any help, feel free to contact me - I'll keep my eyes peeled for you. Mike
nice stuff, everyone. I haven't found an upgrade in ages. In fact, I was offered (actually saw) a nice dime, 1895 O in PCGS G-4 for $400, about 3 weeks ago. That was nearly VG bid. I liked it, but felt that I had to pass, too high. I haven't picked up a '95 O in ages. In fact my last one as in 2006
Thanks Mike, I appreciate the offer, and I may well take you up on it. I just need to pace my buying of the last few coins to keep within my collecting budget, or risk the wrath of she who must be obeyed.
Elbesaar, I also love Barber coins and am thinking of picking up a set or two as well. With you completing and selling full sets, do you ever wonder about the possibility of accidentally buying a same coin you sold before? Or have you ever seen a coin you had sold before for sale again?
It happens more often than you'd think !! I sold an expensive coin at auction - and while looking over a dealers newps, I spotted a coin I considered very choice for the grade and bought it. I put the coin in my case and placed an ask price of $500 more than I paid for it - and it sold within an hour - the collector mentioned that he had never seen as nice a coin for the grade - even though it was $250 more than another dealer's coin. Because of the coin's rarity, I had it imaged as soon as I bought it - and was even more surprised when I found out a week later that it was the same coin I had auctioned off.
These two are in the mail on the way to one of our forun members. Thought he might want to copy the images.
