Thanks... this was my previous 1909 nickel that I had before I upgraded... easily one of the best MS64 Liberty Nickels I've ever had. Bought it from Angel Dee's who have sold me lots of top quality coins. When I upgraded to my MS66, I sold this one to Mike (Elbesaar) for his set. I liked this one so much I tried to win it back in the recent Heritage sale, but it ended up going for more than I bid:

Certainly nothing wrong with that one either.. I would be happy to own either of those...
Very nice with the pop report on the 66 with none finer...

You guys have some great coins and photos. For fun today I took a bunch of photos of barbers I have - some were bought for melt (1906-S), some are details coins because of hits or scratches etc. We're working on putting a set together in F-XF if we can and some of these coins will do as placeholders for now until we can upgrade them.

disregard the grades on the flips. Also I've noticed a bunch of scratches that aren't on the coin in some cases in the photos

  10. Looks like a nice start to the set, Yacorie. Only one thing though, your 1910 may be a removed mint mark. Looks like there was an awful lot of traffic at the mint mark location. I really like your 08-S.

    FYI:
The 1909 S is an inverted MM.

you're probably right. All of these but 2 were picked out by my son - thats usually how it goes. He sees a coin he wants and we buy it. If it's not original or details and he still wants it - we just try to get the price down to something I'm ok with. For the set - we're going to have to really do our research and not just buy what looks good haha.

Are you sure ?!? J/K. How common is it? I realize you were the one that found it - do you see it all the time now that you're looking?

Thanks for pointing that out - I didn't even notice.

  14. There is nothing wrong with picking those coins. Just be sure to keep an eye out for altered dates and mint marks. And I think it's pretty dang cool your son is interested in coins.

Great questions. Since I have been trying to assemble a set of Barber halves in F, I've also run into the situation you describe above. Prices are generally all over depending on the dealer. For the keys, I've found that nice examples often go for more than RedBook. Many of these coins take a real price jump, sometimes even 100% or more when you make the leap from VG to F. The perfect example is the 1907 S. I've been shopping for one in Fine and found most dealers pricing them in the range you state above. This morning I saw one on eBay in VG8 for 35 bucks. I've been outbid on several that were Fine, and people are spending $70-100 on them. I can't find this date at any of my local dealers, so I finally broke down and bought this one in VG, if it really bugs me, I can upgrade later. For $35 it's not going to break the bank.

But I've found prices to be all over the map on these as well. My set is now morphing into more of a VG-F set, than straight fine. But I've found that I can still locate higher end VG coins, say VG-10ish that have quite a bit of eye appeal, and still get a bargain. It just takes patience. Not always my best virtue!:D

I have been working on a Barber $1/2 set for ages.

My plan was F+ for all.

It has seemingly become near impossible.

But, then again, lately, most of the Barber sets in better grades have disappeared.

For the quarters, I had intended an AU set, except for the 3 keys.

Same for the dimes, and I haven't upgraded a piece in ages.

Just picked this one up off eBay for VG money. I think it is trending towards fine. Am I engaging in wishful thinking? What say ye? Be Honest.

  20. I say VG10, but oh so close to a F. I think the obverse is just a bit weak for the F grade. Just my opinion. I think the reverse would pass for a F any day. I like the coin by the way.

I agree with your assessment, right or wrong. When I've been looking lately this coins is right at the spot that in my head would make the transition between grades. I think it's a great looking coin. I just picked up some new ones the other day I'll have to photo tomorrow. I find myself buying them now just to buy them - I'm going to have to work on being picky heh.
