agreed, the 1910 $1/2 is very underrated.

That is the one that I was asking about. After reading the replies and looking into it a bit more, I just decided I didn't trust myself and I'm not bothered by it enough to give it a go. For now, I'm fine with the way it is.

Thank you so much Treashunt! I couldn't figure out how the heck the dime got to be that way. Your explanation makes total sense. Gee those counting machines sure can cause a lot of damage can't they? I never knew to what extant they damaged coins. This is totally harsh!

Can I ask you guys that are collecting barbers a few - seemingly dumb questions. My son and I - his pick of series, my money haha are trying to put together a set in VG-F-XF. I'd love to say F-XF but the prices for some keep me in VG. However, what are you guys finding the dealers are charging for these coins?

Around me - I'm finding that most dealers don't really have the time or are not willing to put forth the time to just let you "look" at what they have when it's not on display. I can't just ask to see their barbers or barbers in the F-XF, they want specific dates, which can be tough at times. There are always so many people in the shops now just unloading coins that they just want to know what date or dates your looking for. I recognize the desire and need to just keep doing buisness; the coffee cans full of coins that are literally pouring in the door is just mind boggling to me. Anyway, when I do find a dealer that either has barber halves on display in that range or is willing to look in his/her inventory - the prices for virtually the same coin seem to be all over the place.

As a rookie - I was curious if you guys have found that this series sells for more than XX reference (gray sheet, red book, blue book etc). I've been given prices for the same date raw coin in F, that are all over the map. For instance, I was with my son and we were trying to find a F-VF 1907-S. We found 3 of them in our search, all at different shops. Two were honest F and one was VG and the prices we were given ranged from $85-130. Being new to the game - but having read a few books, plenty of websites and never ending posts - I'm still at a loss for what to expect when I hit the shops around me.

Any insight besides getting to know them - keep buying etc.

  6. A very good question and one any Barber collector will ask pursuing any barber series (10c, 25c, and 50c). Prices do seem to be all over the map. I have found after looking at many coins on the internet and at coin shows is dealers have a tendency to over grade their Barbers. There is also the factor, that better date original coins usually bring a premium over guide, sometimes even multiples of any guide. Some dealers are in the know and will price their Barber material accordingly to knowledge of the Barber market. Some dealers simply over grade their coins and think they have a killer coin and will have an astronmical price to accompany that. Then you will find dealers that may have nice original Barber coins and have them priced at greysheet just to move them. The expert knows when to spot each scenario and when to pull the trigger. I am far from mastering it, but it's all part of the numismatic education. One thing I do know since I have been exclusively searching halves in the past two months is original Barber halves with nice eye appeal in F-AU will stomp any price guide.

Thank you for this reply, it is very helpful. The highest price we were given was for the VG coin that IMO had been cleaned and retoned. The nicest of the coins was $100 but honestly I was 'confused' by the prices and the fact that they are always all over the map that I figured I'd sit on it for a few days. I'll have to remember that when I see original skin barbers.

    Thanks

If it's Barber's or Morgans you need to get a relationship with your dealer and gain his trust. Though this may take more time than you want to endure but it helps. After you gain their trust they may just give you the box and walk away and let you browse at your leisure. It isn't uncommon for a few of the shops that I do visit to put a couple of thousand dollars worth of coins in front of me and they go to the back room to do paper work or help other customers.

As for the price of the coins and their grades just inquisitively say I though that to be a vf35 the liberty has to be complete. Challenge them their grade vs your grade (in a gentle way) and you may discover that maybe your wrong on some and they are wrong on some. When you find a piece that's what you want and if the price is right just pay what they want for it. In time as a regular customer you can and will get some excellent price breaks.

  9. The other thing I should mention, is knowing the dates. Knowing which dates to toss the guide and go all in and which dates you only want to risk 10% more than guide. I recommend researching as much about them as you can. Past auction results is a great way to determine better dates and prices realized for original coins and unattractive coins.

I'm pleased to see the Barber Thread chugging along and its
refreshing to see a new member posting. LogPotato is setting
you straight - you will need to know when to pull the trigger
when you do locate a nice coin for your son's collection.

A collector friend at the PCGS web site on the BST just sold
his collection in VG8-10. It was a partial collection and all of his
Halves would easily certify at any TPG ... although the set sold to
one buyer, the seller has left his ask prices. All seem to be more than
fair which was probably why it sold in one day !

I'll try and attach a link for your edification... [ best of luck with your set ].
