This Barber Half Dollar got my attention at the Naugatuck coin show this last weekend. It is an AU coin that has more eye appeal than a lot of 61, 62, and 63 coins. It was priced to sell at Gray sheet AU money.
Please post em if you got em. IMO this Barber half is full of luster like a 63 or better coin. However, there is some circulation rub on the highest points so AU58 seems to be the correct grade. Here is a previous thread where several CoinTalkers posted their AU63 coins. http://www.cointalk.com/t78417/ I wish I could afford a set of Barber halves in MS65. However, until I hit the lottery, I’ll be content with my AU63 Barbers. Please post em if you got em.
Here is a link to one of Illini's awesome Standing Liberty Quarters. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm111/illini420/1917quarterobv.jpg
This CBH has booming luster and very pleasing surfaces. PCGS graded it AU58 but I think it should be AU62. Lance.
Low MS coins are typically dinged and baggy looking, not very eye-appealing. If you take an MS65 coin, and give it just a wee bit of wear, it is an AU58 all of a sudden, but has far, far more eye appeal than a MS62 or lower MS coin.
That's a great coin and just the look I want in a Barber. I have an MS63 half that doesn't look THAT good!
Post it if you have a photo. There was a fellow displaying his collection of MS65 Baber Halves at the ANA in Boston last summer. I looked at it for a good 10-minutes. I believe it was his registry set. It was a really (really) sweet set of coins. However, I could never find or afford a set like he had assembled. The AU58 grade like those posted here would certainly make a nice set.
