Let me say that "silly word coins" from "obscure areas which nobody collects" are quite interesting to me. That is precisely how I obtained the rare ancient hammered Moroccan piece I showed earlier. I'm curious if you have a thread about your piece? I can't recall seeing a gold inlaid knife like yours before, although it is not an area that I study.
Here are three of my highlights. The first one is an 1815 quarter graded G4 by NGC. This coin is much nicer than my first 1815, and I personally think it is undergraded. I struggle to find a listing for an 1815 G6 that’s clearly better than it and it matches some low end 1815 VG8’s. Here’s my cherrypicked 1834 B-5 quarter. This die marriage has a rarity rating of R5 (allegedly 31-75 known to exist), so I was happy when I cherrypicked it for a normal F12 price. This one arrived in the mail yesterday: 1820 dime, JR-1, R4, STATESOFAMERICA variety. Another cherrypick, but this cherrypick netted me a scarce variety that people other than die marriage collectors care about.
I was pretty selective in 2018 but still found some great coins... if I had to choose just two it would be these.
Congratulations on your 1809 JR-1, 1916D10C! It looks like a nice coin. I don't believe you have shown it to us before? It can confirm that it is not easy to find nice examples of that date. If I had to chose my two favourite U.S coin finds this year, these would be the two (large cents, of course!): A gift for my eldest son on passing his 5th-year Medical School Exam Certification. This coin was minted two hundred years before he was born. And an 1812 Classic Head:
The 1809 XXX Edge was sold to Harry Laibstain at the Michigan show. He thought it had been lightly polished and retoned in the Wayte Raymond album. Although it was in a details slab, the eye appeal more than made up for it. From the same collection, a beautiful 1818/7 Small 8. PCGS VF35 This one is sitting tight in my PC. The coin reminds me of the plate coin for NGC's website for Bust Half Dollars.
Turn around suddenly. Chances are I’m stalking you. Seriously, go to ANY ANA show, March or August, and ask for me at Registration. They can always find me. My resolution is to TRY TO (positive results NOT likely) think of why I WOULD care about having photographs of my coins. They’re NOT generally for sale or trade, and I can look at THEM. Who needs stinking pictures?
Thank you, Eduard! I actually did before in your very own 1809 and 1822 thread! Now I'm saving for an 1822 so she isn't lonely. I figure I'll have more than enough by the time another one surfaces in 2019. So you have documentation when they are stowed away in the SDB! Are there any ANA shows in the west or Midwest?
Glad you found one! (sorry I forgot that you had already posted it). I remember there was a time, some 5-6 years ago, when there seemed to be an '1809 Capped Bust Dime Fever'. It was impossible to find one! so many people wanted one. I wish you success in finding an 1822. A believe there have seen a few in AG and G go by recently. They looked nice for the grade. They are pricey though...
I don’t DO SDB’s. I live in a secure building, security cams are everywhere, and I ensure with Smith & Wesson.
I was actually looking for one at the height of "1809 Capped Bust Dime Fever", in about 2011 and 2012. I remember in those 2 years less than 10 came up for sale. If you run across any new ones listed for sale, please pm me. I just recently attempted to buy an AG3 one with phenomenal eye appeal, (but was already ridiculously overpriced) and I was willing to pay a premium, yet the seller was too proud and got butthurt when I mouthed off to him after he ignored my messages and refused to entertain any offers under his absurd price, and refused to sell to me. His loss lol, I had the cash in hand, guess he didn't need the money that bad. The same buffoon has a 1916-D 10C NGC G6 CAC listed for sale at $1300..... Man is delusional is all I can say.
I have the proverbial news report “arsenal with thousands of rounds of ammunition.” They can get over THAT, too. Most of it consists of small-bore competition loads of various types.
