One of the advantages of not having your coins permanently encapsulated is that you can display them any way you prefer, allowing others to touch and hold them: Virtual trays for those who haven't seen these too many times in past posts: Small AE -- asses and dupondii: Sestertii: Denarii: Aurei:
Your collection is on another level as those of us mortals. You have incredibly good taste and the means to make that dream come true. That unpatinated Tiberius Sestertius though would „better“ fit into my humble set
Seutonius 12 - 12 Caesars PLUS Vindex Here is another set, as I enjoy a mishmash of denominations...and another Vindex: RI Civil War VINDEX 68-69 CE AR Denarius 3.22g Gallic mint SALVS GENERIS HVMANI Victory l globe - SPQR in wreath RIC 72 BMCRE 34-36 RSC 420 R All displayed in my Albums.
I only have five and they are not high dollar but I like them. I would like your opinion on them as a starter group. Advice is welcomed
I would post mine, but after looking at @IdesOfMarch01 's collection I'm too embarrassed! Just kidding, the real reason is that I'd have more blank spots than filled ones
I have a number of these coins but I chose to show only one. This is my most recent purchase of a "Twelve Caesars" and it is one that I have looked for for may years. Denarius of Claudius Lugdunum 50-54 AD. Obv Head of Claudius right laureate. Rv, Bust of Agrippina Jnr right draped wearing wreath of barley. RIC 81 3.50 grms 19 mm Photo by W. Hansen Agrippina has the distinction of having her image placed on the coins of three different emperors. The first is on the reverse of a sestertius minted by her brother Caligula, the second is this denarius minted by her husband Claudius and the third two denarii, minted by her son Nero.
There are also very rare Sestertii and Dupondii struck at an unknown mint in Thracia late in the reign of Claudius featuring Agrippina Junior´s portrait on the obverse (sadly not my coins):
Wow; just about everyone has some nice ones. IdesofMarch's coins are truly spectacular. I have a mish-mash set of the 12 Caesars, but most of them are unphotographed and they certainly don't live up to that standard. To borrow a phrase of the humorist Jean Shepherd, mine's 'greasy kids' stuff'.
I still need a provincial of Vitellius preferably AE to wrap up this Provincial 12-caesars set. (aka a mish-mash set) Not the Usual "12 Caesars" (a writeup for this set at the link provided).
These are all fantastic sets, not least @svessian's and @Sulla80's newly-posted ones. Even though I have 10 of the 12 in various metals (and multiple examples of 8 of those 10) -- I'm entirely missing only Julius Caesar and Otho -- completing a set is not a particular goal of mine. Although if someone wants to give me the ones I'm missing, I won't say no! I very much doubt I'll ever have Caligula or Claudius in Imperial Silver. Just too expensive. Julius Caesar and Otho are almost as pricey in terms of cost -- I'd have to spend well over $1,000 for a decent example of the former, and close to $1,000 for the latter. If I'm going to spend that much money on a coin, there are others (certain Roman Republican denarii, Imperial gold, etc.) I'd rather spend it on. Even putting a set together regardless of metal and regardless of whether the coins are Imperial or Provincial would be tough. I've been tempted by some affordable Otho Provincials, but he looks nothing like his Imperial portrait on any of them. If that's the case, then the way I see it, what's the point? Here are my 10. 9 are Imperial (because the Augustus cistophorus is catalogued as both Imperial and Provincial) and one, the Roman Alexandrian tetradrachm of Claudius and his mother Antonia, is Provincial. I could substitute one of the two Claudius Imperial asses I have, but I like this coin better.
Since it's already bumped, I feel like one area that doesn't get nearly enough love is the 12 Caesars' Caesars - IMO a more difficult and rewarding set to try to complete. Under Augustus: - Gaius Caesar, his favorite grandson - Lucius Caesar, died too young - Agrippa Postumus, executed for being an ornery brat (missing) - And finally Tiberius Under Tiberius (almost always in twos) - Germanicus & Drusus - Drusus' sons Germanicus and Tiberius (Germanicus died young; Tiberius was later Caesar with Caligula, but no coins from this time?) - Germanicus' sons Nero & Drusus (anyone confused yet?) -Caligula - Have this one as Tiberius Gemellus, but I think a recent example proved this attribution incorrect? Under Claudius: - Britannicus (The OG "Born in the Purple") - Nero Vitellius featured his son and daughter (no coins of them) I'm out of room for now, but in addition to Titus and Domitian as Caesars, Domitian also adopted the enigmatic "Vespasian Caesar", possibly a cousin, shortly before he was assassinated.
