    I learned something today. Essentially there is no difference between reindeer and a caribou. They are the same fundamental species (Rangifer tarandus). At least that is what I just read on the Internet so it must be true.

    Basically correct; "caribou" is usually used for those whose home is North America. In Northern Europe there is a domesticated subspecies called Rangifer tarandus fennicus ... and in parts of the world there is also a very specific type named Rangifer tarandus rubrinasus. But that type is very shy. Only one reindeer of that type has ever become well known. :D

    Wish that I had a photograph of one of those 16th Century Talers under the reign of Rudolf II. Could have made a good red nose reindeer joke.
