1836 4d. from William IV. How come they used 4 "I's" instead of the proper IV?

The seller said "unknown coin". Got it for $4.38. DSCN7921-horz.jpg

Also have a 1834 Willly the 4th 6d. on the way.

I also got a 1918 Sterling Florin for $8.75, not much over melt.

Romans (almost?) always used IIII. I have seen IX and XIX on some (not all) ancient coins but not IV which is a modern way of doing things. I have no idea when IV became 'proper'. Just for the record there is even one ancient coin of Tiberius with XIIX for 18 so don't be too quick to judge 'proper' forms based on modern clock numerals. Also 1836 not long after the English language started being obsessive with proper spellings dictated by those who believed in dictionaries (a relatively new concept then).
