Curiously I own one of the small medals from that issue- even though it was well before my time. The Miss Liberty was designed by Frank Gasparro, and he used it again as a model for the proposed mini-dollar coin in 1977. The latter ended up becoming that hideous compromise called the SBA.

Well, how do you depict somebody who reached an old age? This, for example, is a German €10 coin that commemorates Marion Gräfin Dönhoff who died at the age of 92. Now look at the stamp with the photo. Maybe Dönhoff was not a beauty, but that coin ... nah, she did not "deserve" that portrait. Christian
