I bet that toning is much nicer than it appears in the photos. I agree with Cascade regarding that 71-D you missed out on. That is indeed an unusually sharp strike for that year. I'm pretty sure that most 71-Ds in MS66 don't even have a strike like that one. It really stands out. Dang, I would have gone after it too.

 

You can usually find Denver mint Ikes with a good strike because they had their own die repair shop where as the Philly mint didnt. Thats why 71-P's are hard to find well struck but 71-Ds are easier to find well struck. Keep your eyes out and you can find some really nice 71-D's they have the greatest population over ms65 then any other date. I bought my MS66 from the same seller and its very well struck too.

 

Congrats to hubby on completion of the set...great feeling after all these years I'm sure.

 

Wowzer, that is a nice 66 with a superb strike to boot. The 71-D in my set is a 65/CAC, and it looks like satiny silver. It really looks like a silver issue. It sparkles like no other business issue I've seen.

This is it. Pictures via Great Collections, Inc. I've got to get around to photographing it myself. These pictures are good, but the satiny, silvery luster is all but washed out.

 

Well, since we're discussing 71-Ds, here are some random pickups of this date/mm.




The 64 was originally in my graded set before the upgrading. I didn't need the other two 65s. I just wanted them, and they were cheap. I'm always on the lookout for nice Ikes at bargain prices.

Speaking of which, I just recently purchased my first OGH Ike. . . . . . and it's a 71-D! Lovely smooth tones of charcoal and blue on the date and reverse lettering.



A lowball MS, but the toning more than makes up for it.

The "Nixon" and the "Prototype" are two complete;y different coins with the Nixon being a 1971-S Proof coin with a Type 1 Reverse (production reverse) and the Prototype being completely different Obverse and Reverse designs with a satin, or matte finish.

The Reverse of Type 1 Proofs are speculated as to being Nixon Presentation pieces as some were found in special Brown Boxes.

The Prototype coins (of which there are 3) are suspected of being found in Blue Packs although I do not entertain that particular philosophy. I found mine raw at the Long Beach Coin Show in 2008.

A 2nd example was submitted by Charles Chatham to ANACS and a third showed up within the past year or so.

 

This came over the weekend and actually was a winner! I love it ill post some better pics from my phone but to be honest i was never good with photos. Has nice color in hand and a good strike. lol....

 

Yep. It looks like a winner. I love blue hues on an Ike.

 

This Ike is in one of my 76-P T1 rolls. Boy, is it golden or what?
