Very nice... I was watching that auction as well. Me, I snagged a few of the "Golden Nugget Hoard" coins over the weekend. I tried to win some more, but they just got way too out of my budget. Maybe I'll find some more or they'll pop back up for sale later and I can make a whole year set of them. Amazingly the PCGS graded one was the cheapest, about $22. Go figure.
I watched those Big Nugget Hoard coins. Was interested in the PCGS ones, but there was no provenance... Was thrilled my Type Two went for under my max bid (didn't even come close). I guess the fact that the seller listed it as a T-2 limited its exposure, but that is fine by me. I had a feeling it would go cheap. Basically made the blind purchase for the grade on the plastic, I have my reserves about the coin being overgraded based on the cheek marks, but we'll see. I'm hoping it is cleaner in hand, but if i do decide to later sell it, with the proper listing it should go for a lot more than I paid.
Yeah I was also not aiming for the PCGS ones - and yes, this is one of the only cases I'm buying for the slab/label over the coin - but I'm wondering if I go to ICG with the information and possibly help from Shane over at Kryptonite they'd re-label it. Of course I'll add my own label to it for now but, it ended up cheap enough that even if I can't get it redone it's still a nicely toned coin for a very reasonable price. Good luck with the T-2 in hand. The pics aren't great but it looks like the cheek marks are the only major detriment to it, so hopefully when you see it it'll confirm that and be solid for the grade. BTW - if anyone comes across any of the other Golden Nugget coins in their travels throw me a PM.
1998 or 1999 ? Fun Show#1 it was buzzing about Who was going Grade Gold Nugget items? then Auction the items. until this post I have not seen but 5-10 more coins. But @ one of the fun shows I did pickup a chips .
I buy slabs/labels all the time, just not to keep in my personal collection. Take my latest Type 2 for example. Since I got it for a good price, there is nothing but upside to this coin. If I like it, I'll keep it. If I don't feel it's really a MS64, I could probably make a bit of profit. I like to buy low, sell high, and hold on to the unique stuff. I've really started hunting varieties hardcore for my collection. I don't want any "standard" coins if possible. I want them all to have character (toning, die clashes, ddo, ddr, ect.).
Yep, this pretty much describes my current collecting habits. While I am hunting to finish the various series' off I tend to focus on the varieties and "oddities", and filling a spot with a toned/error coin instead of your typical "problem free" one. Keep up the good hunt...
I meant more specifically the Ike hoard from there like the few I just picked up... But that's OK, I'm good with that...
Be sure to take a close look at the Mint Mark on that 74. There are a lot of different documented marks and mm placements.
1974-S Silver Proof is there also a Rev type to look for???I maybe wrong, but I do recall a email update from the Ike Forum about silver 1974-S Rev find or something not long ago?MS?PR not sure what 1 ?
That's a sharp ike and a great pickup in MS66. I'm looking for one similar to that for my collection right now.
Thanks for the compliment bhaugh, i saw it on eBay and thought to myself wow what a nice coin. As you already know most are either weakly struck or have ultra hairlines this one is actually well struck and isn't all that hairy.
I just re-imaged some of the Ike's getting sent off for grading. I'm still deciding between NGC and PCGS for these. Normally I would think that a few have a shot at a star grade from NGC. However, they have only given the star designation to 5 clad Ike's in total for all years. eek.
I would go with PCGS all the way. I know some people say that NGC has gotten better with their grades, but there is still the stigma of NGC coins being graded as at least 1 point above the market accepted PCGS grade. Some very sharp coins either way. Keep me in mind if you go with PCGS when they come back graded.
