What would you guys recommend for someone just looking for one type example of an Ike for a 7070 typeset? One of the silver ones? A certain d/mm? Proof/MS? I'll be honest I'm not a modern guy and it seems like a chore to fill those slots and not nearly as fun as hunting down the perfect classic series example but I kind of like Ikes just don't know the first thing about the series.
If you go with a silver issue, I would recommend finding a nice 1972-S silver business. Those typically come nice, so it will be easier to find one worthy of inclusion. If you elect to add a Cu-Ni clad I would go with a 1978-D, as these are usually well-struck. Let us know what you decide to do, and, of course, we love pictures.
I placed a 1978-S PF 69 in my type set.... the best looking of all the proofs, and the least expensive too...only about $20 for a near perfect coin. MS coins have bag marks and can also be very spendy for high quality coins.
Yep, the 78-S has the best cameo contrast of any Ike proof. As I recall, the mint deliberately made a change to improve the frosting. It worked.
I bought this Ike from Troy Weaver, who has the ALL TIME finest Ike registry set. He said his company, Mint State Modern Coins, found the Ike in a 1000 coin bag and submitted it raw. The coin has nice luster, even underneath the gold and orange toning. He said he couldn't speak as to what happened to it before it made it into the bag. Still, PCGS straight graded it, which surprises me. It may have been pressed up against folds in the bottom corner of the bag or something if it did tone while in storage. This may be plausible, given the random, chaotic toning pattern . Environmental damage? Maybe. But ugly or not, I had to have it. It's one odd duck. I also purchased this 1972-S proof for my next Dansco set. It has ruby red halo toning along the obverse periphery. It's a deep red, but it really pops in direct light. I used harsh, direct light to bring out the ruby red ring:
In OGP nice toning and frosty devices I think...looks maybe DCAM or does the toning make it less mirrors?
I ordered a 20 coin BU from APMEX and I was dissappointed that only 1 made the BU grade. Had to make arrangements for replacement or refund. They sent me circulated coins and marketed them as BU. Bad APMEX
