Well, I just added a pretty nice upgrade to the registry set: 1971 PCGS MS65+. It's rare in MS65+ (Pop = 9), but there are still 97 in higher grades of MS66/+. It's unlikely that I'll ever upgrade to 66, but you never know. I absolutely love the rustic toning on the obverse and the "smoky" appearance of the reverse. What a handsome Ike!
Whoa... now that is really cool. I never heard of that story before. How do you go about getting your collection’s name on the slab label? Thanks for sharing.
@lordmarcovan - the 71-S and 72-S look amazingly proof-like in the photos and GIFs. I love that glossy appearance on non-proof coins. Do they have mirrors? Can you confirm that they are PL? Thanks.
Thanks! The possibility of ever upgrading this Ike is very slim, so I’m glad it’s one that I am very satisfied with. With the Ike series, eye appeal can make all the difference over technical grade. Believe me, some high grade Ikes are just downright dull and boring.
They are, kind of. I can't confirm that they would meet a TPG's definition of PL, but they're certainly flashy. Both of those two happen to have come from @MontCollector. But wait ... are they actual proofs, and not just prooflike? I honestly can't remember! I think they're MS and PL - not PR - but ... ? Considering I'm the one who took the pix and made the GIFs, it's a wonder you can make out anything!
Wow they do look nicer in your photos than I remember. As for PL I would say no. Neither coin has the mirror appearance imo. While they look nice, the 1971 actually has some of that haze that the 1971 S Silver UNC are known for. Now the 1972 is a different story, I believe this one is very clear. Both were freed from their OGP cellophane tombs by me though. I had a 1972S Silver Unc. Ike that has some of the worse MD I had ever seen on an Ike. I can't seem to find it now so I am thinking this may be that coin. If not my SS recipient got it last Christmas.
The relief on this medal is awesome, probably 3/8 of an inch. Weighs 52.8 g and .9999 silver. Medalic arts.
Registry upgrade..... and a fine one at that. Yeah, the label is crooked along with the coin. Someone did a sloppy job there, but I can live with it. I guess. For now. OCD struggle......
