I used to have an 1860 IHP dug out of a Gettysburg battlefield, that was thought to have been dropped from the pocket of a union solider. Unfortunately, I sold it for 20$ during a hard time in my life.

Ah! Yes, long after the event. The ancient forum posts are related to recent events. Are there US coins about which you can say that type was issued to record some recent event?

Hmmm... how about the Kennedy half dollar? Production began just 2 months after his assassination in November 1963.

That's a very good example. That's the sort of commemoration we see on ancient coins.

I find this interesting as I thought that in ancient time when a leader was removed from his office or title his face was also removed from the coinage, or is this just a Roman thing?

    Related to an historic event?

How about the steel cent... it exists specifically because of a historic event.

How about the Olympics? Those will be about the most current event being commemorated in the US.

How about a 1/2 cent, which was created to give change when someone paid with a bit (1/8 a spanish real)? Or the 3 cent silver/nickel which was created to pay for a 3 cent stamp, and then discontinued when the price of the stamp rose?

Yes, if a successor overthrew a predecessor, coins mentioning the predcessor immediately stopped. However, many times the successor was a son or relative who issued "DIVO" commemorative coins.

Many coins mentioned recent events (victories, travels, promotions, games, vow ceremonies, etc.). Check out the ancient thread to see some:

Just bought this coin. Should be arriving any day now.

A couple days later, I got this contemporary illustrated newspaper which details the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac.
