Two ways to get that purple look. The "bake" technique and the peroxide bath. I'd say that somebody we know may be doctoring coins? Perhaps??? Those of us who collect legitimate toners tend to notice obvious AT, and bragging relative to same.

Bahabully, that nickel is awesome. Talk about monster toning and eye appeal galore! It is freakazoid all the way!

    Let's not confuse anyone here.
1 - If your talking about the Peace dollar, I totally agree with you. AT all the way lol. That said, I did not cook it, nor did I bath it in peroxide (I wouldn't even know how to bath a coin in peroxide).
2 - For other readers, I would not consider "any" purple toned coin AT immediately. There are tons out there in plastic with plenty of purple, but they definitely have a different toning pattern than the Peace dollar a few post back. My guess is that baby toned in a garage, in the oily rag I found it in. Garages btw are full of "sulfer", especially after you drive your car into the garage and fill it with fumes laden with sulfer gas as well as other types of gas. anyway, that's why I think it toned where I found it. But as you say, who know.

Here are some purple toners in plastic, again,,, don't think "purple" is always AT folks:

Not one of those coins you posted is even in the same ballpark as the purple being discussed here.

You really think any of those look even close to these?

So looking at this nifty picture you did here I notice I own a few of those coins... Have I been duped??? If that is the case dang I need to do more research on toned coins.

Yes you might have been duped although i could be wrong but i have seen some his coins for sale on eBay and immediately dismissed them as AT..... No offense i really like everyone here but i have to call them how i see them....

They are very obvious AT. No offense to the person who has them, but definitely must point out the ethical aspects of identifying and stating that they are AT. They should be advertised as such, or it is misrepresentation.

Would you suggest an acetone bath for the at coins I bought?

Well, saying you were "duped" would suggest that the seller was intentionally trying to mislead buyers. I don't know if that's the case.

It's really up to the buyers to better judge these situations and to make purchases of things they find appealing. I am not trying to round up the villagers and their pitchforks and have a witch hunt. I only offer my opinions when I see coins like this.

Acetone won't do anything. The way to removing toning is by dipping. I wouldn't suggest this either as it will eat away the luster with it. I would leave them just they way they are.

That is precisely what i said? His coins are At...

Just because a coin isn't in tpg plastic doesn't make it AT... a lot of the coins I buy raw are toners... some pretty AT looking imo and some NT imo... This issue I have is that I don't think anyone can look at a toned coin and say with 100% certainty that it is AT or NT... they can only guess, or play the odds and likelyhood that the coin could have toned in the pattern presented. Essentially a decision of MA.
I've submitted a few and the have seen some nice ones get slabbed by both pcgs and ngc.. and have had others bagged. More often bagged (I'm still learning too).
I do not doctor raw white coins.. I buy from local folks and generally only by raw toners because I get just as much enjoyment from the raw versions as I do the slabbed variety.. and I don't have to pay the insain premium (although I still sometimes do).

For any raw toner buyer, the question I would focus on is what is generally MA (market acceptable)... and always beware of paying a premium for raw toners. I give this advice to anyone asking me that famous "is it AT or NT" in any of my auctions. Generally my stuff sells cheap, and I'm quite fine selling them that way as I'm glad to see fellow collectors enjoy the toner hobby and amass a nice collection of toners for a fraction of the cost of buying a single slabbed toner.

By the way, I have had more than one buyer pm to tell me that they have done "very well" buying from me and requesting off the site sales. To which I generally decline gratefully.

... we should create a new post imo,, looks like we have some passion on this one... good bar fight material ; ) Maybe a post where folks can post raw toners before submission and see how good folks on this forum are predicting the MA of toned coins. The only person to date I've seen with regularity predict grades and MA of toners is Wing, and that's with cents. Would love to see Mdude, gbroke, etc. (good guys imo) take a stab at buying a raw toner off the 'bay or elsewhere and seeing if they can accurately predict it's MA, post it here, and then see how it does. I'll do the same.. would be fun imo, and provide good content for new and old toner enthusiasts alike.

MDude, If I had not proven myself totally incapable and ignorant of being able to identify AT and NT or even MA, I would post my opinion in all my auctions. The problem I have with doing so is that I can't tell. I've submitted coins I would swear had only a 1 in 50 chance of being slabbed and have had it come back graded... and I have submitted coins I would swear are absolutely 100%, dang near bet the farm 100% NT because I owned it and watched it tone over 20 years, come back bagged (twice !!).. only to submit it the third time and have it get graded... and that was for a $20 coin (that's right, I spent $45 to get a $20 coin graded).. bull headed, huh ; )

A new pick up. I'm a fan of the "young Vicky" coinage.

I just don't have the energy to debate this. But I will say slabbed toners have absolutely nothing to do with it. Plenty of AT coins get into slabs and plenty of NT coins get bagged. You know who defines market accessibly? The particular grader who is certifying your coin. It all depends if they are in a good mood or not.

The issue I take is with the knowingly misleading consumers, especially those not versed in toner collecting.
    Anyway: :dead-horse:

I don't want to drag this thread down. Moving on...

This came in the mail today. I had a heck of a time getting pictures because the proofs were affecting the flash like crazy. This came in a birth year set from the mint, I think. It has mint paperwork in the box, doesn't mean it's real. The quarter and dime have the same purple toning on the front and blue toning on the reverse. AT or NT i don't give rat's patooty, I bought it cause I like it.:)
