Thank you. I have a book on on German Talers by John Davenport. Unfortunately the only years it documents are from 1700 - 1800. My intention was to start collecting them more seriously, but I got side tracked. Can you share a picture of your coin?
Thanks! I was hoping the seller photos were accurate and not over emphasizing the color and luster. Sometimes coins are darker than seller portrays but this one ended up being much nicer in hand.
This is a really interesting coin because of the grade. At AU53 I don't often think of toning lasting, but on this one it is still there. There is a little question in my mind about this being just a really abused coin at the Mint versus a circulated coin. But PCGS obviously thought it was circulated.
Here is another one and I have gone around and around on whether this is technically a toned coin or just one that is not attractive. I finally settled on toned, but with not enough to be learned from it to make it anything special. This is a VAM 5 - O/O Right, Doubled 1 and a Hit List 40 coin so very desirable from that perspective. Much larger images are here http://www.1881o.com/35030681_63_05.html Thoughts?
Here's one of mine that I think toned in an album. Similar pattern, Cobalt blue on the rims, with varying shades of copper in the center. 1878 8TF MS64 by JPeace$ posted Feb 7, 2018 at 8:31 PM
nice coin and I am partial to blue on them for some reason my toned collection is posted on the bottom of this page http://www.1881o.com/toned-coins.html and I have a lot of information on that page about toning and color stages coins go through
Just got this one in and not a bag toned coin. Not sure what caused the toning but certainly one sided contact.
