I obtained this in January as a pocket piece since it had my initials (MB) on it. It looked very much like this photo:
    S-260 Obv-tile.jpg
It had been cleaned harshly, but there was no particular toning to speak of.

Now, it looks like this after I've carried it around in a cotton sleeve in my change pouch and I must say I've failed to capture the stunning toning. But this is the best I can do:

ps This is straight from my digital microscope and has not been through a color enhancement procedure, though I did crop it.

Here’s my new 1828 quarter that I believe fits the bill. At first glance, it appears to have the dark gray appearance that’s characteristic of this series. Shine some light on it, and it becomes pretty apparent that it probably spent some time in a high sulfur content album!

I saw someone refer to this as "gold toning" and I have also seen this called "turning brown." Someone please educate me!

The "seller" calls it Gold Toning as something desirable which is worth more money. The "buyer" calls it Turning Brown as something less desirable and will give you less money.

Chemically, they are the same thing.

    Ahhh. The brown diamond technique.

“This diamond is brown, send it to the saw factory!”

“No sir, this diamond is chocolate, let’s charge a premium!”
