Something containing sulfur, paper envelope perhaps. Gold can form a sulfide compound just like silver to generate toning, but it's much less common. The usual color progression is orange - red - purple - blue, with orange being relatively uncommon and blue very rare.
I really doubt the gold has anything to do with the toning. It is the copper mixed with the gold that is reacting.
This is always a contentious debate, but gold can readily form a gold-sulfide compound on its surface and tone on its own. Even .9999 fine gold coins can tone.
