I hope I didn't show this earlier. I don't think so. Anyway, it's one of my favorite later-year Capped Bust Halves. Lance.
Lance, if you keep these kinds of posts going you're going to have more likes than posts. Sweet Coin! :thumb:
Drat! Sorry. I'll try something different. I think this one might have come up in a different thread. Price guides say this is a $3 coin but I paid a little more for of its eye appeal. Lance.
This is a pretty radical toned early date Lincoln cent. For a common date like 1916 why not have something interesting in the collection to spice things up! NGC says MS 66 BN, and I say it's pretty cool too! Matt
That is a strike you can only see on 1916 and 1917 coins. You can actually count the locks of hair on his ear.
I think the mint should make the obverse of the cent to look like that with the same relief and detail, or at least make proofs like that.
I think in 1010 the mint attempted to do just that and used the relief of the 1909 for the portrait. The 16 teens will always be superior for detail though as I believe it was the craftsmen of the day that pulled it off and arguably impossible to regenerate that level of expertise and artisanship today. You have to wonder, the 1916 Lincoln master hubs were truly masterpieces. They even did a masterful job of sharping the 09 hubs in 1915.
I have heard that they further enhanced it in 1917. From what I have been able to see, I tend to believe it. Regardless, from there on it was down hill.
