Hardly, in fact I have claimed numerous times that I am most definitely not an expert on anything to do with numismatics. I've met, spent time with, and discussed numismatic subjects with those who really are experts, and that will quickly teach you that you are not one. It is a humbling experience.
All of us have met experts--at least those of us who have been collecting for a long time. I don't necessarily get humbled, but I learned. Doug, your posts contain a lot of expertise, which I do respect. However, like the rest of us, you do have your blind spots--nothing wrong with that, but you do. Grading and eye appeal seem to be rather extreme for you--granted I have not been on this message board as long as you have, but have similar experiences in collecting, buying, and selling of coins. So, what it comes down to is basically opinion in many regards.
Doug, Not trying to start an argument here, but I don't think you can call that toning definitely NT, because of your own comments on the subject. I have no problem calling the toning Market Acceptable because it looks like a classic album toned coin to me, but album toning can be faked/accelerated. My guess is that the coin was graded back in the 90's which predates the explosion of the toning market. Am I correct in that assumption? Paul
For what's it is worth I don't find the toning on the Franky's at all worth attractive or worth a premium.... which is probably why they were secured at a very low premium, or at retail nominal price points. Yes, there are indeed a lot of experts in this thread. imo, Doug is one of them, primarily for the reason that he explains above, and which the subtle point may have been missed. Others on the board approach expertise in some areas, but sometimes appear too eager to attain the rank. (maybe a bit of "if you want to be a general, then act like one first".. going on). Fun to watch play out of the years. The Buff indeed could have been AT/MA book toned... but unsure it was slabbed at a time in which that activity was as profoundly in play as it is today. Either way, I found that coin attractive as well.. don't care how it got that way. A tpg putting their blessing on it is a plus, but I'd buy it raw too.... but I'd be very mindful not to chase it to a wild premium over the grade.. ever,, on any coin... unless I just had to have it and had the $ to flush down the drain while my wife wasn't looking.
GDJMSP, Thanks you for your time to make this post. It seems that there is a inner circle of members here that choose to be "Coin Snobs" in the sense that their opinions on toned coins are correct, and others (i.e. Baha) are incorrect, period. Baha has posted some coins that are obvious AT, but he has also posted coins that are not. The "inner circle" has posted coins, some in slabs, that are equally questionable, but once again, they claim are NT, and dare you to say otherwise. The attacks on Baha are just uncalled for, in my opinion. I do "get it", in regards to the fact that many are passionate about this hobby, and the "issue" that AT coins are "bad" for the hobby, and I respect that. I just have a hard time seeing the ugliness amongst us. I am an absolute N00B in collecting, and I DO respect the knowledge of the many members that is on this board. It just seems that some people just hate to be "wrong", or feel that others have bad intentions when posting a coin that that they consider doctored, AT, etc. Like Momma said, "If you don't have nothing nice to say, don't say nothing!". All that to say this, life is too short to quarrel over a coin. Let it go, and let's agree to disagree. Thanks for your time. Peace & Love, ~SR~
Precisely because of my often repeated and well known comments on the subject, I thought it was rather obvious that when I said definitely NT, that I was relating my opinion on the matter. But I can see now that I should have worded it like this - definitely NT, IMO. As for when it was graded, I bought that coin as a gift for a good friend of mine, I believe it was in '02, but it might have been '03. No later than that though. And if memory serves it was a freshly graded coin. Can natural toning like that be faked, duplicated, repeated, AT'd in other words ? Yes, it definitely can be. Any natural toning can be duplicated by those who know what they are doing. But when it is, there is absolutely no way that anyone can ever say with any certainty that it was.
now there's some gorgeous toning. I especially like the 1963 top 1. eye candy. thanks for posting them, Craig.
You mean there's an "inner circle?" Does one need to learn the secret handshake, or have a decoder ring???
Been working with my new lighting setup. Here is one that was in all of the coins that my Grandmother gave me 15 years ago. I like the mottled toning on it.
