I spoke about 3 words of Italian and the dealer apparently didn&#039;t speak a word of English. Somehow the transaction occurred through gestures, writing, pointing at the calendar and little abstract diagrams. Since I had already purchased an Italian set, I knew that all coin sets at that time ran a year behind, which explains why it&#039;s dated 1997 and not 1998. I said &quot;Vatican,&quot; thinking he would understand, but he looked at me like I had spoken absolute gibberish. I thought for a moment and finally said &quot;Vaticano&quot; with as much of an Italian accent as I could muster and his face instantly lit up and he reached in a drawer and pulled out the set pictured. I paid him, then in Lire, and the dealer had a look of absolute satisfaction on his face. I probably had the same look on my own face.
