I bought the coin, it is very much a 1964 SMS. There is tons of information on my website about the diagnostics so I'm not going to rehash them here. About a dozen survive. This coin is so rare that those fingerprints on the obverse almost don't bother me. Best Regards, George
Hey George, can you point me in the right direction? I looked at your site and saw a bit of background, but no diagnostics. Would be interested to learn more. What a rare coin.
I hate Merrillville! My Joss West cue was stolen at a tournament there in 1994. Is the Alaska Pipeline still there? Chris
Roman Republic Æ Triens(20.5mm, 5.75g), anonymous, after 211 BC. Mint in Southern Italy, Sicily or Sardinia. Helmeted head of Minerva right; above, four pellets / Prow right with flat-topped deck structure; above, ROMA; below, four pellets. Cf. Crawford 56/4. McCabe group H1(halfweight overstrikes). Ex. Vecchi sale 3, 1996, lot 124 Paid a decent bit more than the dealer paid for it at auction a few months before but it's one of my favorite Republican bronzes in my collection and is of a really interesting series of Second Punic War overstrikes of Roman designs on captured enemy coins and is really nice for the type. I might have been able to wait and find another sharp example for less in a few years but I fell in love with this coin and couldn't let it go.
Exactly! Some of my best coins are those where I intentionally "overpaid"... I am not looking for bargains anymore, but for coins with outstanding eye appeal, original surfaces and colorful toning. E.g.
What's so special about the IHC? Strike? Color? I'm not into copper is why I ask, with the V nickel it's plain to see why you paid up 4 it.. I would have too!!!!
Sorry, smartphone pictures taken in the late evening... the Indian cent is much nicer, more colorful and lustrous in hand.
How about two coins? Due to that automatic bid increase thing on Ebay where it gives you 3 blue boxes that have an amount higher than the next highest bidder, I overbid on these. The boxes apparently update in real time so as I was going to click to select what would have been my max bid, right as I clicked the amount in the box jumped +$40 and I ended up winning. Guess I won't be bidding on any items in the last few seconds anymore; lesson learned but I'll keep them because I wanted one anyway.
According to a few less than nice comments I got on a UK coin forum, I overpaid dearly for this coin. But, alas, I don't really care -- as I love it! Sometimes you just gotta pay up for nice coins (but not always, as I also have some coins for which I think I paid too little )
