This 1972 F.A.O. issue Tanzanian 5-shilingi piece recently cost me around 5-10 cents, since it was in a bulk lot I bought. Though it catalogs for a mere $2.50 In MS63, it's a keeper. The universal reasons to like this coin: It's pretty big. It has a cool decagonal (10-sided) shape. The design is appealing and quintessentially African. It's a pretty nice example for the type. My personal reasons to like this coin: Nostalgia. We lived in Tanzania for a year when I was a child. The coin is dated 1972, the year my family lived there. The first allowance I ever received was one of these coins per week. If my memories are correct, I could buy a model airplane kit with one of these. That's a lot of joy in a coin that's barely worth three bucks. Post your best "cheerful cheapos"!
Wow using these images twice today! These were about 8ish cents a piece as a part of 12 for one dollar. Thanks, Jacob
This Canadian nickel cost me so little that I don't even remember what I paid for it - probably $10 or less. Regardless, I have always had a weak spot for the humble Canadian beaver nickel despite its extreme availability. The little dot to the right of the date, apparently added for aesthetic reasons for the debut year only, makes it all the more interesting. I hope Canada doesn't abolish their nickel, but it sounds like that could happen sometime in the near future if the rumor mill is accurate. The beaver nickel also reminds me of past trips to Canada, so it also carries an element of nostalgia, though I first visited quite a bit later than 1937.
Here's one that I really like. I love German coins and I picked this up at the beginning of the year. It's a 1950-G 10 Pfennig proof. The business strikes are super common but they only minted 1800 proofs. It's a little hazy, but I still love it. I picked it up for $2.60.
I have several cheap coins that make me happy, but this one is numero uno. It's a big 33mm (the way I like copper/bronze coins), and has some lovely blue and purple toning on the reverse that unfortunately I couldn't capture in this photo. I probably couldn't sell it for more than about $5, but that's OK, because I intend to never part with it.
Just scooped this up from @Valentinian, who had it listed for nine bucks. Seleucid Kings. Demetrios I Æ13 / Palm tree Let's "count the ways", shall we? Over 2,100 years old Decent portrait Nice sandy patina Cool design element (palm tree) Less than ten bucks (OK, it was $11 after shipping). I'll probably flip it or make it part of one of my giveaways before long, but that doesnt mean I won't enjoy it in the meantime. What can I say. For perhaps 5-6 years, I've been a fan of sandy Seleucids with fun design elements. Especially nice looking cheapos. Haven't had an elephant or a "bottle cap" yet, though...
This one really has no value but my grandfather carried it and so did my great grandfather, so its more of a sentimental piece for me now I have it to give to my kid when the time comes.
I like this coin b/c I like the Philippine people and culture and I like their coinage. This is one I bought a long time ago, less than $2 or $3 but I don't remember how much. It makes me happy!
Great thread! This one cost me almost one cent and lots of time searching. My first ever DDO in the wild find!
