Hi new to the thread here so still trying to figure it out but anyhow I have this 1982 small date that looks ,feels and weighs the same as a silver but not 100% sure exactly what it is has anyone ever seen or heard of one?
There is no such thing as a silver Lincoln cent. In 1943, the Mint issued steel cents for one year and one year only. If you run into what appears to be ca silver Lincoln, it has either been plated outside the Mint or has been used in a chemistry experiment.
see... A silver penny (inside joke) Your poll makes no sense.. yes or no is the same as maybe. But it is just no
It is a small date, looks as if the copper plating has been removed and the zinc is showing. Value, .01 cent.
Welcome To Cointalk As stated based on your pictures your coin does appear to be a small date but it has been plated or as stated the science experiment.JMO Dave
OK. Maybe the plating has been removed. The point is there are no silver Lincolns, which we’ve pointed out to a hundred other posters.
Let's see the other side. The reason for my other comment, is usually the plated coins will look as if they have been chromed, or the plating silver, gold, etc. is very shiny. This one looks chalky to me.
I think it is a zinc plated cent ( yes it is 'shiney' when first done), but later it oxidizes like the normal zinc cents. The only way to remove the copper from a zinc cent without distorting badly the underlying zinc would be chemically, and zinc is more reactive to acid than copper, so there would be that result rather than what you see. IMO Jim
I don't doubt that it has been plated, but what is the logic in plating a zinc cent with zinc? Would you plate a gold coin with gold plate? Would you plate a gold coin with silver or copper plate?
Sure there are, pre 1965 cents struck on dime planchets. They are lighter and part of the design will be missing because they will be smaller, but they are silver. Depends on the acid used. It is possible to remove the copper and leave the zinc. (But the zinc WILL show some damage from the acid. Might also be possible using a base rather than an acid.)
This thread is from June 9th.. 2018 The last time the person who posted this thread with the silly poll was seen.
