I was given a few wheat pennies, one of which looks like it may have an error. if you look at the MM near the date you can see that it seems to be up further than the normal and a little squished compared to the normal penny. i was hoping someone can share their thoughts on this, thanks. Also if anyone has an idea on whether or not this is something special.
Until the early 90's (I can never remember the exact year!) the mintmark was punched into the working dies by hand. So, it wasn't unusual for the position of the m/m to vary. If you have an opportunity, look at the mintmarks on Kennedy half dollars from the 70's or 80's. The mintmarks were all over the neighborhood. Chris
the top pic labeled 'normal' looks like it went thru a machine to make it an oval. Thats the only weird thing i see.
the picture posted sideways and made it look like that, its perfectly round, i was talking about the off center mint mark.
