How to tell? Looks altered to me. Isn't that copper showing through? Finish doesn't look right either.
Here was her response when I told her it isn't real. @V.KurtBellman will love her "seen it in a YouTube video as proof" response.
If you don't see luster, it's not an unplaced piece from the mint. I bought an unplaced piece from a coin shop for $5 once because they didn't know for sure. I sent it to ANACS and it came back MS62 unplated. Sold it on eBay for $110.
Keep in mind that many of these sellers of so called "mint error" listings know nothing about true Mint Errors. I myself have sent them messages about their coins. Some delete the items and others ignore me. Those coins are listed forever and never sell
This is mine, but I don't really see any luster at all. It was certified by ANACS MS63. Bought for $45. Or am I confused about what "luster" means for an unplated zinc?
It has some luster still remaining around the lettering and devices. MS63 is a very generous grade. Looks more like MS61. It can darken, but look like a 1943 steel penny.
It probably had luster when it was slabbed, and over time the zinc has oxidized destroying the luster, even in the slab. It's been in that slab for a long time. Probably about 20 years.
