Possible doubled die in the 25th anniversary set

  1. There is a thread in the Error Coins forum that is not getting a lot of action so wanted to start one here in the Billion forum, as I know many of you have an interest in the 25th anniversary ASE set. It looks like there may be a possible DDO on the regular bullion ASE within the 25th anniversary set. Here is a link to an article from Numismaster.com:

    http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis...le&ArticleId=24683&et_mid=536156&rid=16665404

It is estimated that less than 15% of these have the doubling. This would make the estimated population (15,000) less than 1/3 of that of the 2008 reverse of 2007 ASE variety (47,000). This would also be, to the best of my knowledge, the first legitimate doubling ever in the ASE series. This variety could be a potential winner. I checked out my one set and the bullion ASE does have the noted doubling. :smile I posted the pic. I also checked my two slabbed S-less 2011 San Francisco minted bullion coins and neither has this doubling. I also checked my stash of 2011 West Point bullion ASEs today and none have the doubling. This means that this variety could be exclusive to the 25th anniversary set. Check out your set(s) and let us know. Even though the picture I posted in magnified, I can see the doubling without any magnification especially when next to another ASE without the doubling. Good luck! TC

Dosen't seem like this topic is getting much attention anywhere, can't even find any listed on Ebay yet! Still got my 5 sets sitting in the box so with this kind of info it is getting harder and harder to leave them there!

I have 27 of the 2006-W, 2007-W & 2008-W Burnished SAE's that have obverse doubling on the date, sandals & mound, but someone here once said that this doubling is common so I didn't give it any more thought.

I can't right now. I'm going to move the furniture around, and my stereomicroscope isn't connected to the computer to take photos. Maybe soon if I can get off my lazy butt. I keep telling myself that, but I get tired just thinking about work. The stuff weighs a ton!

Yeah my first thoughts were that with todays technology it is darn near impossible to have doubled dies happen anymore, and that with the silver and gold eagles they strike them 2-3x so I figured it was strike doubling too. But I love a treasure hunt so BRING IT ON!

    Question about that 15% estimate.

Can you give any insight on how distributed/clustered the error may be?

Even if the strikes were all done serially, what sort of random redistribution in the form of mixing and out of order handling could have spread the error out?

I guess what I'm really asking is if we can determine any frequency correlation with order numbers, since those of us with sealed boxes stashed really only know that much about our sets.

    Answering my own question... :D

What we will need is a bunch of open set owners to look for this and report their findings/order numbers if we have any hope of correlation on that level. It's probably not something we will get a good handle on any time soon.

I think my one open set is normal. But my 5 sealed sets are becoming ever more valuable. I believe there are now 4 possible anomalies associated with this 100,000 mintage. Sets attained from the secondary market could have coins switched, therefore they are not good case studies.

    what four anomalies?

Well, as far as memory serves me 1) tail feather 2) unintended burnish effect 3) fat top on date 4) DDO. Sorry but I'm not going to look up the sources.

Actually I'm convinced that I have one of these, but mine is only an MS69. Is this supposed to be a genuine TDO or is it only mechanical? Will PCGS recognize it now that NGC is?

  18. Can you please post a pic? I may send mine in to NGC. Thanks, TC

I'll try to get pics of mine uploaded. Back in a few. Does anyone know if this is this is a mechanical variety or the more collectible/valuable kind? Right now only 5 have been graded as this variety by NGC.

In the meantime, here are NGC's pics for those that can't view them. Hopefully I'm allowed to post them!

  21. Thanks for posting that pic. My pic to start this thread is for the regular bullion ASE in the set (no mint mark), which has the fattened date. Now, I had better go check the W burnished ASE for that TDO. This set has become more interesting to me. :smile TC
