Came across this 81 nickel. Any thoughts if the crack going thru the mint mark up to the top of Jefferson's collar is mint or post mint damage? 028.jpg 031.jpg 032.jpg

    not a crack, a scratch.

Before it goes down in value

Just damage. When you run across a coin like this, do a few simple things to eliminate PMD. Look for displaced metal, indicating a scratch. Use a wooden tooth pick to see if the mark is incused or raised. Incused=damage.
If you coin passes these tests, check for matches on sites like Variety Vista and Jefferson Nickel Cuds.

    Good luck

On a die cracked coin, the actual die has a crack that will be filled when it strikes the planchet. The area where the die is cracked will be raised not incuse!

Thanks for the feedback, gang! Enjoyed the responses, did not know the affected area of the coin would be raised!

That’s known as definitely damaged. A die crack will be raised.
