just picked these puppies up today, but i paid $5 a piece, so im hoping i didnt lose too much money 1915 Portugese 10 Centavos (silver) 1929 Portugese 50 Centavo (Alpaca, AKA CuNi)
What Portugal issues these days is a mixed bag so to say - some designs I find very attractive, others are ho-hum or worse. Here for example is a fairly odd €8 piece commemorating Henry the Navigator: http://www.muenzauktion.com/ludwig/pic/artid3709_combined.jpg This one is from the Unesco World Heritage series; it shows the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. http://muenzen-shops.de/witte/pic/x_6291a.jpg They also have a neat "coins on coins" series; I like how they adapt the "modern" side (with the country name, face value etc.) to the style of the historic piece. Started in 2009 with this 13c "morabitino" design: http://www.honscha.de/bilder/15p092.jpg, followed by this 16c "justo": http://www.honscha.de/bilder/5p10.jpg Christian
Christian, I like thier historical coins very much, especially the Manual. However the 8 Euros is gastly.
Here's one I don't believe anyone has posted. It's a 1775 4 escudos (half Joe). This type was well known in colonial America. The second slide has some coppers that have been posted, though I don't think the silver 160 reis has. BTW, I believe that the Portuguese system of reis helped inspire Gouverneur Morris' proposed coinage system for the United States.
Manuel II. 200 reis 1909, silver .835, weight - 5 g., mintage - 7656000 pcs. The single release only.
And one republican coin. 10 centavos 1915, silver .835, weight - 2,5 g., mintage - 3418000 pcs. The single release only.
