The Gortyna is my absolute favorite, but beyond that, I haven’t ranked the rest. What I’d say is that even though the difference between the #2 and #10 would be pretty infinitesimal, I do have a softer spot for the Cleo, JC, A-Pi, Festival, and Lokris. You echoed my own feelings when you pointed out that the Lokris is not just a pretty coin, but also cool because it depicts a character from the Iliad. I love mythological types! The question about measuring a "best collecting year" is an interesting one. My tastes haven’t changed very much, but every year has been different and great at the same time, allowing me to welcome into my collection not only coins that havelong been on my want list, but also some real surprises that I either never knew existed, or I never knew I wanted. That all said, on reflection, I measure my “best collecting year” not just by the coins collected, but also the memories made collecting them. For that reason, 2017 was for me the most fun, unforgettable, and meaningful. Why that’s the case is summed up in this thread: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/my-two-most-memorable-purchases-of-2017.307240/
I immediately fell in love with your Antoninus Pius because I love Roman mythology and the story of Rhea Silvia , Mars , and subsequently Romulus and Remus, but I wound up voting for your Sater from Lokris because it is just exquisite though I know next to nothing about Greek coins. I felt guilty about not voting for Julius Caesar. They all are such beautiful coins. In real life we are often confronted in elections with the choice of voting for "the least offensive" candidate. You certainly turned that around with all your very desirable coins!
What a great idea for a thread, Z, I love it. My top 5 (in no particular order) are the Lokris, the Caracalla/Geta damnatio, the Isis festival, the JC, and the Cleo. To decide how to vote, I engaged in a very pleasant exercise of imagination: suppose Z offered to send me one of these. Which would I pick?? My vote went to the JC. I'll be checking my mailbox...
I had to go for the Geta damnatio - I have a weakness for countermarks and that pushed me over the edge. But all of them are marvelous. A great, well-rounded collection indeed.
That Lokris stater is absolutely amazing. But I am a sucker for history so I like that Gortyna stater a lot as well, so that's my favorite
Aww, I'm touched you think so highly of me, Sev. However, I feel I need to suggest that you not hold your breath. I'd hate to lose a friend because of his wild imagination. Thanks for saying that, @octavius. Having admired many of the coins that you've posted, I'm sure I'm not the only one hoping to see a list of favorites from your own collection at some point.
