These "Steckenreiter-Klippe" pieces were made shortly after the Thirty Years War. The war ended in 1648 when the peace treaty was signed in Münster (today in the state of NW) and Osnabrück (today NI). Afterwards, in 1649/50, the further details were negotiated at the Friedensexekutionshauptrezess in Nuremberg (Nürnberg, today BY). Piccolomini replied that he was not prepared for this but that they should come back a week later; he would then give them something. The next Sunday even more kids came, and Piccolomini gave each of them of these klippes that he had made. This was the 300th anniversary of the Westphalian Peace (25 Oct 1648), and also shortly after WW2. Since then, every year more than 1,000 schoolchildren (mostly 9 year old) on hobby horses have come to the city hall on 25 October. And while the Osnabrück Peace Day is mostly about peace, interreligious dialog, migration and integration, they will at the end get a ... nah, not a klippe but a sweet pretzel.

Christian
