Hey - how come SGS isn't an option? It is always an interesting discussion when some talks about there favorite grading company. Now here is why I like PCGS best - because I like their holder better. I don't know why I just do. At the same time I think they are a little tougher on the coins I like to collect than NGC. Yet - at the same time I would not pass up a nice coin in any slab. Hey - maybe we should stop playing guess the grade and start playing guess the TPG based off the grade. I bet that would make for some interesting conversation.
I agree with you. I try to buy the coin I like the most regardless of TPG. In fact, I just purchased a 1959 Franklin DDR in an ICG slab because it was such a striking coin. You definitely are right about the 69/70 moderns. TC
NGC for me, Grading .Customer Service and ease of coins in and out when sending them in. PCGS holders and labels are unattractive and makes a difference when selling slab coins.
As someone from the UK, we have the CGS, which specialises in UK and Commonwealth coins. I have not seen too many disagreements regarding their grading, and indeed would be seen as very trustworthy here.
Who has the tougher standars for grading 1909 to present Lincolns. The reason why I ask is you see a lot of the proof 70 dcam cents in NGC holders going for about $100 less than the same graded coin in a PCGS holder. Now lets say the coins both deserve the grade they are given. Why does the NGC coin sell for less than the PCGS coin. I dont care who grades the coin, I just want to get the best coin I can for the least amount I can so I can get more coins.
For years there were many people who claimed that PCGS purposely refused to assign the 70 grade in order to create the market's belief that they had tougher standards than the other TPGs. I was one of those people. And for years, we were all told we were crazy. That PCGS would never do such a thing. That we had no proof, that we only said that because we didn't like PCGS. Then PCGS came out and admitted it. Of course they didn't use that reason. Their reason was that they were afraid the coins would turn in the slab and they would get stuck honoring their guarantee. Of course all of those people who told us we were crazy all those years are for the most part unaware of what eventually happened. And by then it was too late anyway. After 20 years of decption the market had already decided that coins in PCGS slabs were worth more. And getting people to change their closely held perceptions and beliefs is all but impossible. There are also several other reasons involved in the mistaken value perception. But coins in PCGS slabs continue to sell for more than coins in other TPG slabs. But to a much smaller degree because more and more people are becoming educated and learning the truth as time goes on. All of that said, as a general rule PCGS is a bit tougher on Lincoln cents than NGC. But the level of their consistency is worse than NGC's. So it's kind of a toss up as to which TPG would be preferable.
Without a doubt, this is the best explanation I've heard in 10 years. I guess you could say it is somewhat like the guy who refuses to buy anything but a Mercedes and continues to pay $300 for a tune-up. Chris
POLL: PCGS vs NGC My Vote is for NGC Holder,Why? the plastic holder is much more durable and heavy duty rather than PCGS with easily to have a crack underneath when you file it. I do have more than 30 PCGS slab and the same thing of NGC holder. I am much well satisfied with NGC Holder.
I would like to share my experience with the 4 major grading services, I sent 4 coins to NGC . One was an MS70 by ICG and 3 were MS70 by ANACS. The ICG coin dropped 2 grades to MS68 and the 3 ANACS all dropped 1 grade to MS69. Then I sent a NGC MS69 and an PCGS MS69 to ICG and the NGC came back MS67 and the PCGS came back MS68. Obviously none of them has set grading standards and the grader is the only one who decides the grade and it must be however he's feeling that day

That is true even on the currency side but you really only have two PCGS and PMG but you will generally find a tougher grading standard at PMG however as of late it has kind of evened out !
They all have set standards that do have some variance from TPG to TPG. A simple size of 5 coins really isn't an indication of anything, but with that said ICG moderns are essentially treated as raw coins by the market and ANACS ones sell at a discount as well. And of course the graders decide the grade, that why they are graders grading
