Poll: Most you (a collector) have spent on a coin

@Kirkuleez you're right, this thread needs more coins. And the one you posted is stunning!

Most of my military trade tokens go for around $10. Many auction between $10 - $40 with some even reaching as much as $200+. You can expect to spend more for older bases, rarer bases, and popular ones. Since I'm after Air Force tokens and the Air Force is a newer branch they're cheaper. Old Army tokens range in the hundreds as well as Sutler tokens. Here's a couple tokens that fit into the lower end:

I don't have any examples of high dollar tokens but I have one that I feel should command a higer price than what I paid, as Patterson Field only existed a few years between WWI and WWII; it was first seperated from Wright Field only to be absorbed a few years later and we now have Wright-Patterson Air Force Base:

The coin below falls more into my midrange budget for ancients. I just really like this coin and haven't had enough opportunities to post it.


And since the coin I've spent the most money on hasn't arrived yet, I'm going to refrain from posting it, but I can't wait to see it!

All the expensive coins I buy are one ounce gold coins. You can't help but fall into a higher range doing that. But those aren't plentiful when it comes to my average cost per coin.

 

Yep - never bought a 10k+ coin. I did see one last Friday that I wanted - but it was 53K(1796 AU53 bust quarter just beautiful toning) so I passed on it. I was say if you averaged all my purchase it would probably run in the $100 to $500 range.

 

Definitely. I have seen his amazing display, and was so impressed by it, I was tempted to assemble a 12 Caesar set until I discovered how difficult it is to find decent examples with full letters/words, attractive portraits etc.

 

My most expensive. Took me 3 years to save up for this one. And it was my first big purchase. It's still a money pit, never needed to pay for a safety deposit box before buying this one.

I broke the $5k barrier on one and regularly spend $2-4K. Nearly all my trade dollars were in excess of $2k. I'm sure I'll break the $10k barrier sooner or later there's a few I'll have to on

 

Bought the Gold Kennedy last year thinking I would want it for my Kennedy set, but later decided it wasn't a good fit and resold it.

 

12 Ceasars you say? Well, I'm 3 for 12...none of these were expensive and though Nero is a bit rough, I think it's a great coin.

Good question. Probably the most expensive coin would be in the $1500-$2000 range. I haven't bought any coins for almost a year because unexpected expenses have absorbed most of my disposable income. Last year I was picking away at a seated Liberty half set in (gasp) run-of-the-mill condition. The individual coins rarely exceeded a hundred dollars, although a few were nearly $500. Since most of my coins are raw I shy away from high priced specimens unless the dealer is reputable. I am thinking of selling some bullion in smallish lots and purchasing graded pre-1933 gold with the proceeds. I expect to spend in the $1-$3k range for each coin so will rely on TPG for verification. I do, however, worry about counterfeit TPG holders and will research the subject before getting serious.

 

Why is it still a money pit?

OOOHHH!!! I actually like both your Augustus, and Vespatian coins. Their lettering is fairly decent, and the portraits are attractive.

 

Here is my most expensive numismatic item ever purchased, largely due to it being quite rare (mintage 5).

 

The Nero is much more readable in hand and I was able to decipher the legend. It was fun to get it properly attributed. The Augustus is very pleasing. It will be today's favorite.

@ksparrow , that is an absolutely PERFECT 1795. Fantastic color, smooth surfaces, great amount of detail.... that thing is stunning.

 

Most i spent was $10 on an almost-uncirculated 1883 no cents V Nickel, maybe i can get a better picture of it later?
