Ok I'm getting this but now you said 'raw', explain please. Is it because it is not graded but a subjective assessment of the Morgan ?
Raw means you can actually touch the coin and flip the coin heads/tails..... It also means its NOT slabbed by ngc, pcgs, anacs etc etc.
If you have any other questions dont be afraid to ask, there are many many experts here, not just on morgans but other series as well....
Trust me I will. I have many other items that I have questions about. The Morgan was a good starting point.
Ask away, I was hoping to get back into the heated debate we were having, but noones took the bait yet. It doesnt go over real well with the folks here to argue grade with them so I TRY not to insult or get under anyones skin. Doesnt always go as planned If anyone else would like to interject on the phenomenon of tougher grading on 79-80-81s please do.I havent seen this with my own eyes yet so PLEASE if u have a ms64 morgan and feel it to be a 65 please post it! Obviously im not talking about old fatty and rattler holders
Oh, heavy banter, I like that. My next series of questions will be understanding VAMS. I have read many definitions but continue to be confused. I guess you can elaborate without confusing my feeble mind.
The best way for me to explain vams would be to go to the vam 101 page @ vamworld.com. They have a nice crash course there and can explain it way better than me. In a nut shell EVERY morgan is a vam. Its just a matter of matching up your coin to the known catalogued coins at the site for each date. What we are ALL trying to do is find the rare ones worth ridiculous $. 1889P vam 23 comes to mind= $100000 coin!!
I will do my reading.....and my heart jumped I've got an 1889 P sitting in front of me right now..Oh I wish !
Well i hate to be the bearer...... That would be a great coin to study for a newbe... It is the biggest IN clash in the whole series... If you google 1889p vam 23 it will come right to top of page... check it out!
My bad its 23a not 23 http://www.vamworld.com/1889-P VAM-23A Here is the link for those who would like to learn about a $100000 coin
Nice coin, i dont believe it was graded on this huge curve everyone seems to believe exists. If they wanted to b tough on that coin i believe it would have came back a 63... Im starting to wonder if its all just hearsay @ this point as noone has shown proof of this tough grading phenomenon as of yet
I agree with you...I think. I have Not observed tougher grading of mid-MS grade 79-81S Morgans. Quite the opposite. In my experience submitting a few hundred Morgans to P and N, and looking a few thousand others...it is my observation that the toughest grading occurs on the cusp of a big jump in value. I can semi-corroborate this statement (semi, because I have never met any graders or former graders from P or N). I know a former grader from ANACS. Coins which were on the edge of a jump will get a second look. Coins which are not on such an edge do not get the extra attention. Time is money, and these guys look at 200+ coins in a day. This "edge" can happen on the MS grade, but also on the PL and DPL decisions. And I would intuit that N would give a second look at a coin granted the ever-desirable STAR.
I actually know a few ex anacs graders myself as I live in columbus oh... Ill hafta ask one of them, to get their take on this subject. If anyone has an 79-80-81-82 San Fran morgan with top notch eye appeal and considered "good" for the grade, plz post away!
Well i must be from Missouri, cause i gotsta lay eyes on it before i believe. I know alot of you who commented know your stuff. Im to the point where i would take a bet on this just cause... Ive got $45 in it so wiggle room to submit to tpg. It comes back 64 or lower i pay submission fees if it comes back 64+ or higher you pay the fees...Any takers?
Unfortunately, i doubt there are any takers here. Sad too as everyone was so adament when i first posted. Oh well, im no better than the next guy @ photo grading. Thanks for entertaining and putting up with me community. Its been fun, cincy coin show in the mernin' cant wait!
