Oh, and thanks for your support, Paddy (you rock) => everybody change their vote and I'll buy you a new car!! SMALL PRINT WARNING: the comments above are lies from a liar
Did @Curtisimo write "shameless lobbying" somewhere ? Come on @stevex6, my boy, does your mum really know how you behave ? I have to admit laughing a lot at your silly comments, my canadian friend Q
Curious? ... would this have done better, or worse? or this? ... just curious (in case there are future coin-brackets) *sigh* ... I still love my choice (one of my favourites) => Hey, it ain't over yet, my lil sweetie!! => run, lil' fella, run!!
Yeah, Steve, I love your Zodiac A-Pi, but looking at how the people have voted, I suspect the sharp Luna in an oxen biga would have stood a better chance against that killer she-wolf didrachm. Tough match!
Sorry @stevex6, nothing could beat the Lupa this time. She has trained herself at feeding the twins for more than 2000 years and knows exactly what to do, how to pose or look at them with love in her eyes, so people find the scene so cuuuuuute they can't help but vote for her. Young Hercules on the other side has an easy play, all the girls finding him soooo handsome, all the boys, well, while they have to refrain some deep and guilty feelings, have to admit he's quite a handsome SOB too ! Taurus couldn't resist the wave I think That said, your choice was very clever and brave (I've been wondering whether I should stay on the motorway with big machinery, or take the side ways as you did. In the first rounds the big machinery seems more efficient and consensual I guess). I love that Zodiac Antoninus Pius drachm, and would welcome any of them in my trays any day. This face to face has been of great entertainment, thanks to your sense of humor, and others' contributions. Thank you again to @Curtisimo for his impeccable organization. Now I've to warm up for the next round ! Will Z bro' be the next in lane ? Amused Q
Q v. Z? It would be a match for the ages! That Z has some sneaky-awesome coins in his pocket but Q's coins are always showstoppers.
I don't know about this match, but last I checked, mine is faaar from being over! Should I lose, I'll actually gladly take a seat in the spectator stands with a big sigh of relief. Should I win, however, I guess I'm going to have to man up, prepare to face off against Big Q and his shiny stunners, and just try my best to avenge my coin-bro @stevex6!
One of the main reasons I opposed this popularity contest is that there is no way of competing with a superb specimen of a popular coin. Bringing in the cost factor certainly does not even the field. Expensive coins would not be expensive if there were not demand to support their prices. We may as well just award the grand prize to the $100,000 super coin which may well be the bargain of the century compared to some $200,000 coins if what you seek in coins is popularity. They say we should not compare apples and oranges but what we are doing here is more apples vs. Beef Wellington (it should be no surprise that I prefer apples). I love the Steve Taurus drachm but certainly would like it with the obverse shown on the alternative drachm. Harlan Berk wrote a book and declared the winner to be IDES MAR. There are some of us who might prefer another coin for some reason or another (I'd rather have an Akragas dekadrachm - Berk #8 - but I'm weird). The fun in the hobby IMHO is not having the coin most people like most but having the most coins that I like. If you are ashamed of your Pius bull after he goes down in flames, cut it in half and send the pieces to TIF and I. To me, that makes as much sense as limiting what we like to what a popular vote tells us is best.
No Sir, I'm sorry to say I've gained rigths on that one, he should send it to me ! You're of course right in your comments Doug, but part of the fun in a game is to try taking advantage of the rules (no cheating there), and, from the number of voters I bet people are having fun. Sure, a good example of a popular coin is an easy route, still it's a nice coin I have pleasure to have and to look at. And it has real historical and numismatic interests, not just artificial shine ! Q
I respectfully disagree. I think an Eid Mar could be defeated by a budget coin that was either remarkably beautiful or historically interesting. At the very least it would be competitive in a fun way if people voted on a straight category basis. If we're talking popularity, that's subjective too, give me a gold Athenian tet over Eid Mar any day. I always always enjoy reading your posts @dougsmit. I hope you are still enjoying the tournament in any case. Remember that this is all in fun and is meant as an elaborate way to benefit charity and give away a coin . If it helps set your mind at ease I will pledge an additional $10 to the winners charity in your honor
Uhh... no way, José! That's one of the coolest coins of my favorite emperor! I agree inasmuch as one can easily predict the winner of the "eye appeal" category based on which coin is the higher grade. OTOH, popular coins are popular for a reason. That reason may be because they're readily available (e.g. VRBS ROMA), or because they're historically and numismatically interesting (e.g. portrait Julius Caesar denarius). Variants of interest only to specialists are not going to do well in this category simply because they are variants of some other not so interesting thing, and I don't find that to be a problem. I'm enjoying this contest as an observer, because I've gotten to see a lot of cool coins that I haven't seen before. It might be apples vs Beef Wellington, but I'm just glad it's food.
