1909SVDB How badly has it been devalued after using a copper cleaner?

Super Dave I appreciate your advice and input. I spent my evening through the collection books. I found a book of the older pennies that have been stored for over 75 years. They haven't turned dark. I don't know what to do next. Any advice about coin shows would be appreciated. I live in California

Can you tell me how they did the re-toning? Some suggested hard boiled egg yolks would be one solution.

I would not try to darken it. Give it an acetone bath and put it on you desk and watch it for several months. Don't rub it in any way but pick it up and touch it. See what the coin does on it's own before trying to doctor it.

SuperDave... I sent photos of the front and back of the coin and posted it Wednesday evening. Would you take a look at,when you get a chance and let me know your thoughts. Thank you again, Sue

I will try the acetone with one of the less valuable pennies.
SuperDave. I never realized my dad was such an avid collector. I found his coin collection ina small hard box, that's been stored for over forty years. I don't anything about coin shows, but it's time to check them out

Acetone will only remove organic substances, it will not harm your cents in any way. But, if you do read the cautions on the container and follow them, it can be dangerous if used incorrectly.

The color looks a bit unnatural, for sure, although in your images I see a bit too much yellow tint. Shoot on a monochrome background - white in this case - to give your camera a better shot at getting the color right, and in addition we can factor how "white" the white background is to help compensate.

Although a short soak in acetone is my default behavior for all new raw coins I acquire. Obviously, after so long in storage, anything capable of adversely affecting the coin would have already acted and that doesn't seem to be the case, but benign organic stuff can sometimes alter the appearance of a coin as well.

Consider Larry's post above to be the right thing to do. Like usual, he speaks with wisdom. :)

Thanks guys! I appreciate your advice. I'll get a photo on white. I posted a $20 gold piece last night. I've just begun to scratch the service of my dad's collection I don't know my next move, but after the penny fiasco, I'm a little gun shy. It's definitely a learning curve

Well, don't discount the remaining value of the S-VDB. It's not inconsiderable, and the coin is important enough to consider things carefully and do what's right for its' future, even if that answer is "leave it alone." Headed to go find your Twenty now. :)

Still a nice coin. Still worth several hundred dollars.

It really doesn't look too bad. My advice - DO NOTHING TO YOUR COINS. Do attempt to clean, retone with eggs, or ANYTHING at all to them. You'll end-up making a bad situation worse.

Those old, blue Whitman folders are not very good. Personally, I'd remove all the coins from it and put them in 2x2 holders for now. Is every slot filled in the folder?

Yes every book is filled. The books end at 1959 to present. I believe this was a secret hobby that my dad hid from everyone, including my mother
