Really nice $20 bill I found in the cash register where I worked, just had to buy it: Very lightly circulated for a 35 year old bill too; just slightly folded. Less and less of these are around anymore so had to give it a home outside of circulation!
Cash register finds today: 1952-D Lincoln wheat cent 1950 Jefferson nickel; sadly not a 1950-D, but still, semi-key!
This reminded me of a 1934 $20 I got from a customer when collecting on my paper route. I was a coin collector, but something about finding a 50-year old bill in circulation had me giddy. So, I kept it. Decades later I took it by a LCS near me, where I bought and traded coins, and asked him what it was worth. "$21." LOL I was shocked. I could have played in the arcade all night back then...but I missed the opportunity!
Lol... I'll be honest, yeah, my $20 bill here is probably not worth much more than face value right now. But the point is, I have it, and I enjoy looking at it more than the amount of enjoyment I'd get out of spending it. It just reminds me of a time where having a $20 bill felt like a bigger deal. And I always loved the scrollwork on the obverse for some reason. It feels impressive somehow in a way more modern $20 bills just don't.
Oh and, find from the cash register today (I didn't buy it though): Series 1977 $100 bill. Everyone was looking at it, wondering if it was genuine (we get fake bills from time to time). The machine didn't like it, but on close examination I am 90% sure it is genuine.
I kept my 1934 $20 too...has a fun story to it now and my oldest piece of US Currency. To add to the LCS story, the owner brought me a crisp 1934 $100 bill. It was in a vinyl sleeve. He told me to flip it. Price tag had $107 where he said, "Oh...and the vinyl sleeve is about $2 of the cost." A good lesson was learned that day.
